CITB Solving Problems and Making Decisions

This CITB Leadership & Management course in Solving Problems and Making Decisions was developed by the construction specialists Acadame.

Delivered at our centre in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, virtually online or on-site; the purpose of this standard is to enable the delegate to develop the knowledge to be able to solve problems and make decisions as required by a practising or potential site supervisor:

  • how to describe a problem, its nature, scope and impact
  • gathering and interpreting information to solve a problem
  • evaluation of options to make a decision
  • planning, monitoring and reviewing the implementation and communication of decisions

Leadership and management are key skills for all construction sites and an area where the industry has identified a need for greater support and training.

CITB pay grants for the achievement of approved short courses, which last from 3 hours to 29 days and are focused on the core construction skills needed across the industry.

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational groups: supervision, management and leadership:

Assessment

How someone is measured

The method of formal assessment considered appropriate for training delivered against this standard is by a combination of a question paper and a practical exercise. The question paper consists of 5 questions based on one question per assessment criteria point within learning outcomes 1-3 and 4.2 with a bank of 2 sets of question papers. Evidence from the practical exercise will be needed to answer the question paper.

Delegates must achieve 75% correct answers to pass.

Assessment of 4.1 is assessed by a scenario based practical exercise where the delegate must demonstrate competence of the assessment criteria.

  • describe, in detail, a problem, its nature, scope and impact

Describe how to gather and interpret information to solve a problem

Assessment of this learning outcome must cover the delegates ability to:

  • gather and interpret information to identify possible solutions to a problem
  • prepare a summary of the options providing facts and evidence

Explain how to evaluate options to make a decision

Assessment of this learning outcome must cover the delegates ability to:

  • apply a simple decision-making technique to evaluate options to arrive at the best solution

Plan, monitor and review the implementation and communication of decisions

Assessment of this learning outcome must be via a scenario based practical exercise which covers the delegates ability to:

    • plan the implementation and communication of the decision
      • create a detailed and SMART action plan that fully plans both the implementation and communication of the decision, thoroughly describes responsibilities and details resource requirements (including people and finance)
    • describe which monitoring and review techniques could be used to evaluate outcomes
