The NPORS N602 Chainsaw – Maintenance & Cross Cutting course is designed to equip operators with the essential knowledge and practical skills required for the safe and efficient use of chainsaws in various work environments. This comprehensive training covers key areas such as understanding industry-related hazards, adhering to safety protocols, and recognising operator responsibilities. Participants will learn to conduct pre-operational checks, identify and operate machine components and controls, and implement appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). The course also emphasises environmental considerations, proper storage and transport of equipment, and end-of-shift procedures, ensuring compliance with current health and safety regulations.
Understand industry-related hazards and operator responsibilities, including compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and PUWER Regulations.
Familiarise with the manufacturer’s handbook for the specific chainsaw, ensuring safe and compliant operation.
Identify major components of the chainsaw and explain their functions, including power units, cutting systems, and safety features.
Conduct pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer and legislative requirements, ensuring equipment readiness and safety.
Select suitable chainsaw types relative to specific tasks, considering factors like timber diameter and location.
Identify and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety boots, ear defenders, face/eye protection, gloves, and leg protection.
Operate the chainsaw safely and efficiently, including proper handling, cutting techniques, and site safety considerations.
Implement environmental considerations, proper storage and transport of equipment, and end-of-shift procedures, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
The method of assessment is a three-step journey:
A written assessment covering regulations, machine controls, and operational safety.
Candidates will demonstrate the safe operation of the tool, including pre-operational checks and performing tasks.
Candidates will showcase proper shutdown techniques to ensure safety and compliance.
