About this course

The CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, still called the HS&E test or the touch screen test, is the exam that sits between you and a CSCS card. Every card application needs a pass from within the last two years, whichever card you are going for.

It is one test with several versions. Which one you sit depends on the job you do and the card you are applying for, and sitting the wrong one will hold your card application up rather than speed it along. All of them are booked here: you pick the version when you register, or tell us on the phone and we will set it up.

It takes forty five minutes, it is multiple choice, and you find out whether you have passed before you leave. We are an approved test centre in Stoke-on-Trent, with sessions every fortnight.

  • Your legal duties and your employer's, and what the site is entitled to expect from you
  • Health and welfare: the things that damage people slowly rather than suddenly, from dust to noise to hand arm vibration
  • General safety, high risk activities and the work that kills people on sites every year
  • Environment: what you do with waste, spills and the ground you are working on
  • Behavioural questions, which are about what you would actually do rather than what the rule book says
  • The revision material CITB publish, which the questions are drawn from

How completing this course helps you

  • A CITB HS&E test pass, valid for two years and recorded against you
  • The one thing every CSCS card application needs before it can go in
  • Your result on the day rather than in the post

Who should attend?

Anyone applying for a CSCS card, at any level. Labourers, apprentices, skilled trades, supervisors, managers and professionally qualified people all need a pass, just not the same version of it.

Entry requirements. None. You do not need a course or a qualification first, and you do not have to have done the Health and Safety Awareness course, although plenty of people do both on the way to a green Labourer card.

Which test, and what comes next

Picking the right test, and the card it leads to

If you are not sure which version you need, use the CSCS Card Finder: put in your occupation and the qualifications you hold and it will tell you both the card you are eligible for and the test that goes with it. Or ring us and we will work it out with you in two minutes.

Sitting the wrong version is the single most common reason a card application stalls, and it is avoidable. The test itself is not refundable once it is sat, so it is worth the two minutes.

For a green Labourer card the route is the one day CITB Health and Safety Awareness course plus the operatives test. Plenty of people book both together and get the whole thing done in a fortnight.

1

Work out which test

By the job you do and the card you are applying for. Card Finder will tell you, or we will.

2

Book the slot

Pick a date here and choose the version of the test when you register. Sessions run every fortnight at our Stoke centre.

3

Pass, then apply for the card

The pass lasts two years. Your card application is checked against it, so get the card in while it is live.

Method of assessment

How the HS&E test works on the day

CITB set the test and we run it as an approved centre. It is the same test wherever you sit it.

1

Turn up with photo ID

Bring photographic identification. Arrive a few minutes early so the session starts on time, because the slots run back to back.

2

Fifty questions in forty five minutes

Multiple choice, in English, on a touch screen. Fifty questions, including behavioural case study questions that ask what you would do rather than what the rule says.

3

Your result before you leave

You are told whether you have passed on the day. A pass is valid for two years and is what your CSCS card application is checked against.

Prices are per person and exclude VAT. Nothing here has to be booked online: call 0330 124 2165 or email hello@acadame.co.uk and we will book you on, or put a date on to suit you.

Everything we run is on this page, whether or not a date is showing. Where a course is scheduled, open the availability column to see the dates, the centre, the price and how many places are left. Where nothing is scheduled it only means nobody has asked yet: tell us the course and the numbers and we will put a date on, here or at your place.

HSE test FAQs

It depends on the job you do and the card you are applying for. Operatives covers the Labourer, Trainee and Apprentice cards and most Blue and Gold craft cards. Managers and professionals covers the Black Manager card and the qualified person cards. The specialist tests cover the Gold Supervisor card and certain trades. If you are not sure, use the CSCS Card Finder or ring us on 0330 124 2165 and we will tell you.

Forty five minutes, multiple choice, on a touch screen, in English. It includes behavioural case study questions that ask what you would do in a situation rather than what the rule book says.

CITB set it at 90 per cent on the operatives test, so 45 correct out of 50. It is a high bar by design, and it is why the revision material is worth an evening rather than a glance.

Two years. Your CSCS card application has to be made while the pass is still live, so it is worth getting the card in rather than sitting on it.

No. The test has no entry requirements. For a green Labourer card you need the one day CITB Health and Safety Awareness course as well as the test, and a lot of people book the two together.

Photographic identification, and yourself a few minutes early. The sessions run back to back, so a late arrival can mean a rebooking.

Both. We are an approved test centre, so the slot you book here is the test. You pick which version you are sitting when you register, or tell us and we will set it up for you.

You can sit it again. Tell us and we will get you on the next session rather than leaving you to work out the booking yourself.
