About this course
This one day course is designed to support with understanding the potential risks and hazards that construction workers may face on site.
It identifies everyone's responsibilities for looking after themselves and others, outlines the employer's duties, and explains what should be done if a worker thinks that anyone's health and safety is being put at risk.
There are no formal entry requirements and it suits all ability levels.

Who should attend?
An ideal foundation for anyone wanting an industry card. It is also an alternative route to the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment for the CSCS Labourer card.

Green CSCS card
How to get your green CSCS Labourer card
This course is one half of a green card. CSCS accept the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course as an alternative to the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, and it counts for five years. The other half is a pass in the CITB health, safety and environment test for operatives from within the last two years.
Worth knowing before you choose. An accepted alternative can only be used once, so when the card comes up for renewal you either sit this course again or take the Level 1 Award, which has lifetime validity. Ask us and we will work out which is cheaper for you across five years.
The Labourer card is for unskilled work only. If you already work in a trade it is the wrong card, so tell us what you do and we will point you at the one that matches the job.
Sit the test the same day
HS&E test for Operatives runs at the same centre on these dates, once the course has finished. One trip, one day, both parts done.

Sit the one day course
Full attendance across the day, then the CITB assessment. You leave with a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate that CSCS accept for five years.
Pass the operatives test
The CITB health, safety and environment test for operatives. Forty five minutes, multiple choice, and CSCS need a pass from within the last two years.
Apply to CSCS
Through the My CSCS app or CSCS Online. Once the application is approved the card normally arrives within five working days.
Renew when it is due
A first Labourer card runs for two years. After that you renew for five years by confirming you are still in a labouring role.

There is an assessment. CITB set it for every Site Safety Plus course and it is taken during or at the end of the course.

Run Health & Safety Awareness (HSA) at your site

Health & Safety Awareness (HSA) FAQs
Not on its own. It covers the qualification half of a green Labourer card application. You also need a pass in the CITB health, safety and environment test for operatives from within the last two years. With both in hand you apply to CSCS for the card itself.
At our Stoke centre, usually yes. The course runs in the morning and HS&E test sittings run in the afternoon at the same address, so most people do both in one trip. The dates that pair up are listed on this page, straight from our booking system.
Five years. CSCS accept this course as an alternative to the Level 1 Award for that period. An accepted alternative can only be used once, so at renewal you either sit the course again or take the Level 1 Award, which does not expire.
There is an assessment, set by CITB and taken during or at the end of the day. Full attendance across the day is required before it can be taken.
Probably not. The Labourer card is for unskilled work only and a skilled worker holding one can be refused site access. If you have a trade, a Level 2 NVQ leads to a blue Skilled Worker card instead. Tell us what you do and we will point you at the right route.
