Site Safety Plus goes up in levels

Operatives

Health and Safety Awareness, one day. The course on the route to a green CSCS Labourer card, alongside the HS&E test.

Supervisors

SSSTS, two days. The qualification most principal contractors ask for by name for anybody supervising a gang.

Managers

SMSTS, five days. For site managers, agents and anybody running a site rather than a team.

Then keep it alive

Certificates last five years. SSSTS and SMSTS both have refreshers, and both have to be done before the certificate expires rather than after.

Funding

CITB grant, and the test that sits alongside the course

CITB registered employers who pay the levy can claim grant against Site Safety Plus courses. We will tell you whether a course attracts grant and help with the claim, and we do not publish the amounts here because they change.

The other thing worth knowing: the Health and Safety Awareness course and the CITB HS&E test are two different things and you need both for a green Labourer card. People routinely book one and assume it covers the other. We are an approved test centre as well, so you can do the pair with us.

CITB courses, answered

It follows your role on site. Operatives take Health and Safety Awareness. Supervisors take SSSTS. Site managers and agents take SMSTS. If a principal contractor has named a course, go with what they named and send us the wording if it is not clear which one they mean.

Level and length. SSSTS is two days and is aimed at supervisors: people responsible for a gang or an area. SMSTS is five days and is aimed at managers: people running the site. A supervisor stepping up to management needs SMSTS rather than an SSSTS refresher.

Five years. SSSTS and SMSTS both have refresher courses, one day and two days respectively, and both have to be completed before the existing certificate expires. Once it has lapsed you are back on the full course.

No, and this is the single most common confusion in the whole scheme. The HS&E test is a 45 minute touch screen exam. Health and Safety Awareness is a one day course. A green CSCS Labourer card needs both. We run both, so you can book them together.

CITB registered employers who pay the levy can usually claim grant against Site Safety Plus courses. We will confirm what applies to the course you are booking and help with the claim. Grant rates change, so we will give you the current position rather than a figure on a web page.

Many can. CITB approve live online delivery for several Site Safety Plus courses and we run them that way as well as in the classroom. Tell us which course and we will confirm the formats available.

Yes, at our centres or at your own premises anywhere in the UK. For a full cohort it is usually cheaper per head and it lets us use your own site examples, which makes the scenarios land much harder.

They do different jobs. SSSTS is a two day course with a five year certificate that a principal contractor checks at the gate. A Level 3 or 4 NVQ in site supervision is a vocational qualification that leads to a CSCS Gold Supervisor card. Many supervisors end up holding both.
