About this course
This one day course is for anyone on site with responsibility for supervising temporary works. It covers the processes involved and the duties that come with the temporary works supervisor role, with the emphasis throughout on communication, co-ordination, co-operation and competency, the four Cs.
Temporary works on a small site can carry as much risk as on a large one, so the risk and safety management set out in BS 5975:2024 applies whatever the size of the job. The course explains the role and the wider management process it sits inside.
CITB developed the course with support from the Temporary Works Forum and the Health and Safety Executive.

Who should attend?
For anyone with on site responsibility for supervising any form of temporary works.
Entry requirements. None formally. CITB recommend at least six months in a construction environment, or the Health and Safety Awareness course, or a pass in the operatives HS&E test.

Competence and cards
TWSTC, competence, and where the coordinator course fits
TWSTC does not award a CSCS card, and CITB are unusually direct about what it does award. Attendance does not make you competent as a temporary works supervisor. Competence comes from education, training and experience together, and it is judged by a senior person on the project, usually the designated individual.
What the course gives you is the training half of that, and CITB call training an essential element of competence. It is also not a technical awareness course. Technical points are signposted and worked through in the exercises, but the subject is the process and the role.
The step up is the Temporary Works Coordinator course, two days, for the person managing the temporary works process rather than supervising the work on the ground.
Sit the one day course
Classroom or live online. Full attendance, then the CITB assessment, then a Site Safety Plus certificate that runs for five years.
Have your competence judged
The designated individual on the project decides whether you are competent as a TWS, weighing the training alongside your experience and education.
Move up when the job does
Supervising becomes coordinating on bigger or more complex temporary works. That is TWCTC, two days, and we run it the same way.

CITB set the assessment for every Site Safety Plus course, and it is taken at the end of the day.

The CITB standard behind this course, GET0017, runs to 7 hours and 45 minutes including delivery and the examination. Ask us for the current format before you book if it matters to you.
Certificate
A CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, valid for five years. There is no short refresher for this one, so the full day has to be retaken before it expires.

Temporary Works Supervisor (TWSTC) FAQs
Not on its own. CITB are explicit that attendance does not demonstrate competence: it comes from education, training and experience together, and a senior person on the project, usually the designated individual, decides. The course is the training part, and CITB call that an essential element of it.
The supervisor course is one day and is for the person supervising temporary works on the ground. The coordinator course is two days and is for the person managing the temporary works process. Both are built on BS 5975. If you are not sure which one your role needs, ask us before you book.
Yes. CITB allow this course in a classroom or by remote delivery and we run both. We also run it at your own workplace for a group, anywhere in the UK.
Five years. There is no shorter refresher for the supervisor course, unlike the coordinator one, so the full day has to be retaken before the certificate expires.
No. Technical awareness is signposted and comes up in the exercises, but the subject is the temporary works process and the supervisor's role in it. The technical side sits with the designer and with specialist training.
