Who it is for

Who this LOLER course is for

LOLER applies wherever lifting equipment is used at work: cranes, hoists, forklifts, passenger lifts, slings, eyebolts and vehicle lifts among them. Most failures trace back to a missing examination or an unplanned lift.

  • Plant, lifting and rigging operatives
  • Maintenance and engineering teams
  • Warehouse and logistics staff using lifting equipment
  • Site supervisors planning lifting operations
  • Garage and vehicle workshop staff
  • Anyone responsible for inspection records

Course content

What the LOLER course covers

Five short lessons covering what LOLER covers, strength, stability and marking, planning lifting operations, thorough examination, and reports and defects, then a 12-question assessment.

1

What LOLER covers

Lifting equipment and accessories, and the boundary between PUWER and LOLER.

2

Strength, stability, positioning and marking

Safe working load, stability, markings, and equipment for lifting people.

3

Planning lifting operations

Competent planning, supervision, the lift plan, and stopping when conditions change.

4

Thorough examination

Examination intervals, written schemes, and examination after exceptional circumstances.

5

Reports and defects

Examination reports, defects, quarantine and taking equipment out of use.

Outcomes

What you will be able to do afterwards

  • Explain what LOLER covers and how it links with PUWER
  • Check strength, stability and markings on lifting equipment
  • Describe how lifting operations are planned and supervised
  • Recall thorough examination intervals
  • Act on examination reports and defects

Your legal duty

The law behind LOLER training

The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 require lifting equipment to be strong and stable enough for the load, positioned and installed to minimise risk, marked with its safe working load, and subject to thorough examination at set intervals. Lifting operations must be planned by a competent person, appropriately supervised and carried out safely.

LOLER sits alongside PUWER rather than replacing it. Equipment that lifts is work equipment too, so both sets of duties apply at once.

  • Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)
  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)
  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 - sections 2 and 7
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 - risk assessment

For employers

LOLER training for a team

LOLER awareness is worth having across a site, not only among the lifting team. Most incidents involve someone who did not realise the rules applied to them.

  • One invoice instead of a card payment per person
  • Licences allocated as people join, so induction is covered
  • Completion and expiry reporting for your records
  • Renewal reminders before certificates lapse
  • Bespoke versions built around your own procedures

An Introduction to LOLER eLearning: common questions

PUWER covers work equipment generally. LOLER adds duties specific to lifting equipment and lifting operations, including safe working load marking and thorough examination. Lifting equipment is covered by both.

It depends on the equipment and whether it lifts people. LOLER sets intervals, and an examination scheme can set different ones. The course explains how the intervals work rather than expecting you to memorise them.

Yes. Both are lifting equipment, and passenger lifts carry the shorter interval that applies to equipment lifting people.

A competent person with the necessary practical and theoretical knowledge and experience, who is sufficiently independent to make an objective judgement.

About 30 to 45 minutes, with no time limit. Start it, pause it, and come back whenever suits. The certificate is issued as soon as you pass the end assessment.

Yes. It runs in a browser on any modern phone, tablet or computer. Nothing to install.

Yes. Open a business account and we invoice you for the licences. You allocate them as people need them, with completion reporting included.
