Who it is for

Who this factory health and safety induction course is for

Factory floors combine moving machinery, vehicles, noise, dust and shift patterns. New starters are the people least able to read those risks. An induction completed before day one is the cheapest control available.

  • New production and warehouse operatives
  • Agency and temporary staff
  • Maintenance and engineering starters
  • Contractors working in a production environment
  • Supervisors inducting new staff
  • Anyone returning after a long absence

Course content

What the factory health and safety induction course covers

Five short lessons covering duties on the factory floor, machinery and guarding, vehicles and pedestrians, noise, dust, substances and PPE, and emergencies and reporting, then a 12-question assessment.

1

Duties on the factory floor

Why new starters in factories are at risk, the duties your employer and you each have, and training before using equipment.

2

Machinery, guarding and isolation

Dangerous parts of machines, the types of guards, emergency stops, and isolating a machine before clearing or cleaning it.

3

Vehicles and pedestrians

Lift trucks and other vehicles, keeping pedestrians and vehicles apart, crossing points and reversing.

4

Noise, dust, substances and PPE

Hearing protection zones, extraction and COSHH controls, and wearing and caring for the PPE you are issued.

5

Emergencies and reporting

Alarms and evacuation on a production floor, first aid, and reporting accidents and near misses.

Outcomes

What you will be able to do afterwards

  • Explain your own duties and your employer's on the factory floor
  • Recognise guarding and isolation requirements on machinery
  • Move safely around vehicles and pedestrian routes
  • Understand why hearing protection, extraction and PPE are used and wear them properly
  • Respond to an alarm and report an accident or near miss

Your legal duty

The law behind factory health and safety induction training

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require health and safety training on recruitment, which is what an induction is, with the general duties in the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 behind it.

A factory brings several specific regimes into play at once: PUWER for machinery, the Noise Regulations, COSHH for substances, and the PPE Regulations. This induction gives the awareness that sits underneath all of them. Task-specific training sits on top.

  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 - training on recruitment
  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 - machinery and guarding
  • Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 and COSHH 2002
  • Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 and the 2022 Amendment

For employers

Factory Health and Safety Induction training for a team

Agency and seasonal intake makes factory induction a constant. Licences allocated as people join mean nobody starts uncovered.

  • One invoice instead of a card payment per person
  • Licences allocated as people join, so induction is covered
  • Completion and expiry reporting for your records
  • Renewal reminders before certificates lapse
  • Bespoke versions built around your own procedures
