  • Site, catering and cleaning teams
  • Volunteers and governors
  • Contractors working on school premises
  • Trainee teachers on placement

Course content

What the health and safety induction in education course covers

Five short lessons covering health and safety duties in a school, hazards in a school, fire and evacuation, accidents and reporting, and raising concerns, then a 12-question assessment.

1

Duties in a school

Who the employer is in different types of school, and the duties the law places on the school and on you, including to pupils and visitors.

2

Hazards in a school

The hazards most likely to hurt staff and pupils in schools, from slips and handling to practical subjects and contractors.

3

Fire and evacuation

What to do when the alarm sounds with a class, taking registers, and pupils who need help to evacuate.

4

Accidents, first aid and reporting

First aid arrangements, recording accidents to staff and pupils, and when RIDDOR applies, including to pupils.

5

Raising concerns, safety and safeguarding together

Reporting unsafe conditions, contractors on site, and where health and safety and safeguarding overlap.

  • Report unsafe conditions and recognise where safety and safeguarding overlap

Your legal duty

The law behind health and safety induction in education training

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require health and safety training on recruitment, which is what an induction is. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 places general duties on the employer and on employees. Section 3 covers people who are not employees: in a school, that means pupils and visitors.

Who the employer is depends on the school type: local authority, academy trust or governing body. Safeguarding sits under separate statutory guidance and is covered by its own course.

  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 - training on recruitment
  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 - sections 2, 3 and 7
  • Section 3 covers pupils and visitors as people affected by the school's undertaking
  • Safeguarding is governed by separate statutory guidance

Health and Safety Induction in Education training for a team

Supply and seasonal staff make school induction a recurring administrative problem. Licences allocated as people join solve it.

  • One invoice instead of a card payment per person
  • Licences allocated as people join, so induction is covered
  • Completion and expiry reporting for your records
  • Renewal reminders before certificates lapse
  • Bespoke versions built around your own procedures
