CITB Developing Yourself as a Team Leader
For the tradesperson who has just been handed a team, or is about to be. A CITB Leadership and Management short course for supervisors and managers, assessed on the day with no assignment to write up.
About this course
CITB Developing Yourself as a Team Leader is one of twelve CITB Leadership and Management standards, written for construction by the industry training board rather than adapted from a generic management course.
It is about what a team leader is actually accountable for, where their authority stops, and how to find out honestly how they are doing.
The standard runs to 6 hours. There is no assignment and no portfolio, and the certificate does not expire, so nobody sits it twice.
- Describe the role and responsibilities of the team leader, including accountabilities, the limits of their authority and when a matter must be referred to a higher authority
- Seek feedback on their workplace performance to identify strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement
How completing this course helps you
- Know exactly what you are accountable for and where your authority stops
- Recognise when a matter has to go to somebody more senior, and say so early
- Ask for honest feedback on how you are doing and act on what comes back
- Move from doing the work to running the people who do it
Who should attend?
Site based and office based supervisors and managers, anyone who could be managing a team in future, and employees not yet ready for a supervisory role who would benefit from the development.

Method of assessment
How Developing Yourself as a Team Leader is assessed
CITB set the assessment for this standard. It is taken at the end of the course.
Take part in full
CITB require full attendance across the 6 hours before the assessment can be sat.
Assessment
A question paper of 4 questions plus a scenario based practical exercise and a professional discussion. 75 per cent to pass the paper.
Certificate
Issued against CITB grant code GET3265. It does not expire and there is no refresher requirement on this standard.
