About this course
The QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid is the one day paediatric qualification. It is built for people working in early years settings alongside colleagues who hold the full two day Paediatric First Aid award, so that the room is covered when the qualified first aider is at lunch, on a school run or dealing with somebody else.
It concentrates on the emergencies that will not wait: an unresponsive infant or child, CPR, choking, serious bleeding, shock and seizures. It does not attempt the full sweep of childhood illness and reporting that the two day award covers.
That focus is the point of it. A room where everybody can start CPR on an infant is safer than a room where one person can do everything and nobody else can do anything.
We run it at our centres and at nurseries, pre-schools, clubs and schools across the country, usually in a single day that fits around a setting's ratios.

Who should attend?
Staff in early years and childcare settings who support a colleague holding the full Paediatric First Aid award: nursery assistants, apprentices, bank and agency staff, out of school club staff, sports coaches working with children, and volunteers.
Entry requirements. None. You need to be physically able to carry out practical first aid on the floor, including CPR on a manikin, and to have enough English to follow the training and the written assessment.

Choosing the right one
Which first aid course does your workplace actually need?
The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 do not name a course. They tell an employer to carry out a first aid needs assessment and then provide what that assessment says is adequate, which is why two businesses next door to each other can land on different answers.
The rough shape is this. Lower hazard workplaces usually land on Emergency First Aid at Work, one day. Higher hazard workplaces, larger headcounts and anywhere with specific risks usually land on First Aid at Work, three days. Early years settings have their own rules through the Department for Education. Outdoor and remote work adds distance from the ambulance, which changes the answer again.

Do the needs assessment first
Hazards, headcount, shift patterns, lone workers and how far you are from help. The HSE guidance is the starting point and it is short.
Match the course to the answer
EFAW for lower hazard, FAW for higher hazard, plus any specific qualification your setting or your insurer requires.
Plan the three years
Certificates last three years and the HSE recommends an annual refresher in between. Diary it when you book, not when it expires.

- When to administer CPR to an infant and to a child
- Demonstrating infant and child CPR on a manikin
- Placing an infant or child in the recovery position and monitoring them
- Seizures, including febrile convulsions
- Choking, mild and severe
- Controlling serious external bleeding
- Recognising and treating shock
- Recording and reporting the incident
Method of assessment
How Emergency Paediatric First Aid is assessed
Assessment runs through the course rather than being bolted on at the end. Your tutor observes the practical work as you go, and the written paper closes it off.
Practical observation
Observed through the day: primary survey, infant CPR, child CPR, the recovery position, choking and bleeding control.
Written assessment
A short multiple choice paper at the end of the day covering the emergencies the course has worked through.
Certification
Issued by QNUK and valid for three years. It does not on its own meet the EYFS requirement for a paediatric first aider, which is the two day award.

Emergency Paediatric First Aid FAQs
No, and it is not meant to. The Department for Education requirement in the Early Years Foundation Stage framework is met by the two day Paediatric First Aid award. This one day qualification is for staff supporting those first aiders, which is exactly how QNUK describe it.
Infants and children rather than adults. The CPR ratios differ, the airway differs, choking is managed differently on an infant, and febrile convulsions are a childhood emergency that does not appear on a workplace course.
Yes. Plenty of people start here and take the two day Paediatric First Aid award later when their role changes or the setting needs another qualified first aider. Nothing is wasted.
Yes, where they are working with children and the setting wants everybody able to handle a life threatening emergency. For sports specifically there is also an Emergency First Aid for Sport qualification, and we can tell you which fits your situation better.
Three years. The HSE also recommends an annual refresher in between, which is a half day and keeps skills and confidence current rather than letting them fade for three years at a time.
