NUCO Level 3 Award in First Aid for Mental Health (Supervising)
Two days for the people who are going to be told first. Managers, supervisors and wellbeing leads who need to recognise what is happening and know what to do about it, not just sympathise.
About this course
This is the Level 3 award in the NUCO First Aid for Mental Health suite. It carries the Level 1 and Level 2 content and then goes further, into the part that matters if you carry responsibility for other people: what the organisation is supposed to do, and what you personally can and cannot take on.
It covers a wide range of conditions, what the early signs actually look like at work rather than in a leaflet, and how to open a conversation with somebody who does not want to have one. It deals with the awkward parts honestly: what to do when someone asks you to keep it quiet, where your responsibility ends, and when to get a professional involved.
It also covers the employer side. Stress is the single biggest cause of work related ill health in Britain, and the HSE Management Standards exist because the causes are usually organisational rather than personal. The course looks at what in the way work is designed and managed makes things worse, which is where a supervisor can change something.
Two days, classroom at any of our four centres, or at your own workplace anywhere in the UK. On site is usually the better option for a management team, because the conversation can be about your own people and your own pressures.

What to expect
It is a discussion course rather than a lecture, and it works better when people are honest. Groups are kept small for that reason.
Some of the material is heavy going. There is no expectation that anyone shares anything personal, and the tutor will say so at the start.
Two consecutive days, and you need both for the certificate. Lunch, refreshments and materials are included.

Everything we run is on this page, whether or not a date is showing. Where a course is scheduled, open the availability column to see the dates, the centre, the price and how many places are left. Where nothing is scheduled it only means nobody has asked yet: tell us the course and the numbers and we will put a date on, here or at your place.

Supervising First Aid for Mental Health FAQs
Yes. It is a Level 3 regulated award from NUCO Training, the same awarding organisation behind the Level 1 and Level 2 first aid for mental health awards.
Level 2 is for anyone who might be a first point of contact. Level 3 is for people with responsibility for others. It carries all the Level 2 content and then adds the supervisory and organisational side: what the employer has to do, how work design contributes, and where your own responsibility stops.
There is no legal requirement to have a mental health first aider in the way there is for physical first aid. What the law does require, under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, is that you assess the risks to your people, and stress is a risk like any other. This course helps you act on that assessment rather than satisfy a rule.
Three years, in line with the rest of the first aid for mental health suite.
Yes, anywhere in the UK, and for a management team it is usually the better option. The pressures people talk about are then your actual pressures rather than generic examples.
Parts of it can be, and we would rather say so. Nobody is asked to share anything personal, the tutor sets that out at the start, and there are breaks. If somebody needs to step out they step out.
