About this course
The NPORS N020 Tiltrotator System category covers the attachment system that sits between the excavator dipper and the bucket and lets the bucket rotate through a full circle and tilt to either side. It is not a machine category. It records that an operator who already holds an excavator category can work that machine safely and properly through a tiltrotator.
One day covers the system itself: how it mounts, the hydraulic and electrical connections that feed it, the control setup in the cab, the quick hitch at each end of it, and the checks the operator makes before they pick anything up. Connecting and disconnecting attachments, visually inspecting them and proving that a coupling has actually locked are the parts that matter most, because a dropped attachment is the way this equipment hurts people.
The rest of the day is operating. Working to line and level with a tilting bucket, trimming batters and slopes, shaping and stockpiling, working at an angle to the machine rather than square to it, and understanding what the extra weight and reach at the end of the dipper do to stability. The category is registered against the operator's existing record and appears on the card alongside the excavator category they already hold.

Who should attend?
Excavator operators whose machines are fitted with a tiltrotator, groundworks and civils contractors who have bought into the system and want the competence recorded, and plant hire companies supplying machines with tiltrotators fitted. It is for people who already operate a 360 excavator: if someone has never held an excavator category, they need that first and we will tell you so rather than take the booking.
Entry requirements. You should already hold the relevant NPORS excavator category, or be able to show equivalent recorded competence, because this category sits on top of machine operation rather than replacing it. You should be at least eighteen, fit enough for the work, and able to follow spoken and written English for the theory test, though an interpreter can be arranged. For the version of the card that carries the CSCS logo you need a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass at Operatives level within the last two years, which we book for you. What you will cover
A short classroom session on the system, the couplings and the law, then the rest of the day on the machine, with testing at the end.
The system, the coupling and the law
- Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, PUWER 1998 and LOLER 1998 where the machine is used for lifting
- The manufacturer's handbook for the excavator, the tiltrotator and the coupler, and what each requires of the operator
- How a tiltrotator works: rotation, tilt, the hydraulic and electrical supply and the control setup
- Quick hitches and couplers, lock indication, and why proving the lock matters
- Inspection, thorough examination and maintenance requirements for the system and its attachments
- Stability: added weight and offset at the end of the dipper, and the effect on capacity and reach
- Site hazards with an attachment that can swing wider than the operator expects, including people on foot
Working the machine through the system
- Pre operational and running checks on the machine, the tiltrotator and the coupler
- Connecting and disconnecting attachments, visual inspection and confirming engagement
- Setting up the controls and travelling with the attachment in a safe position
- Excavating, trimming batters and slopes, and working to line and level with the bucket tilted
- Backfilling, shaping and forming stockpiles

Method of assessment
How the N020 tiltrotator system test works
NPORS assess the category by theory test and practical test. The practical is done on the machine and the tiltrotator the operator will actually be using.
1. Enquiry and group
Tell us how many operators, where, which machines and which tiltrotator system. Four can go through in a day with one instructor and one machine. We quote per group.
2. Pre course check
We confirm every candidate already holds the excavator category this sits on top of, check whether the CSCS logo version of the card is needed, and take the details NPORS need to add the category to the record.
3. Training
A classroom session on the system, the couplings and the duties, then the rest of the day on the machine working through the tiltrotator.
4. Theory test
The NPORS theory test covering the system, couplings, inspection and maintenance, stability and safe operating practice.
5. Practical test
Checks, connecting and disconnecting attachments, then excavating, trimming and shaping through the tiltrotator, assessed against the NPORS test specification.
6. Registration and card
We register the pass with NPORS and the category is added to the operator's card alongside the excavator category they already hold.
After the course
The excavator category underneath it
N020 is a bolt on. It records competence on the attachment system, and it only means something sitting on top of an excavator category: the N202 Excavator 360 for tracked and wheeled 360 machines, or the N201 Excavator 180 for backhoe type machines. If an operator does not hold that yet, the excavator course comes first and the tiltrotator day follows it, sometimes in the same week. We will not put somebody on the one day course and let a card imply more than it says.
The other thing worth doing alongside it is the quick hitch. Almost every serious tiltrotator incident is a coupling incident, and the N726 Quick Hitch Awareness category covers the hitch in its own right: types, lock indication, the checks, and the failures that have actually killed people. A fleet running tiltrotators usually ends up putting everyone through both.

Yes. N020 records competence on the attachment system, not on the machine. Operators need the relevant NPORS excavator category first, normally the N202 Excavator 360, and we check that before the booking rather than after.
No, and it is worth being blunt about it. A tiltrotator category on its own does not qualify anybody to operate an excavator and a site that reads the card properly will treat it that way. It is a bolt on to a machine category.
One day, with four operators to one instructor and one machine. An operator already using a tiltrotator daily takes the test focused route, which is no longer, and the refresher is the same length. We confirm it when we quote.
Connecting and disconnecting through the coupler, inspecting it and proving the lock are part of the day, because that is where the risk sits. If you want the hitch covered in its own right, including the failure modes and the inspection regime, the N726 Quick Hitch Awareness category does that.
It matters enough that we ask. Controls, lock indication and connection routines differ between makes, so the practical is done on the system your operators will be using. If you run more than one make, tell us and we will cover both.
Yes, and it is the usual way this one runs. A day on your own machines costs you less downtime than sending operators away, and they train on the exact system they will be working with. We need a suitable area for the practical and a machine in a testable condition.
Four, with one instructor and one machine. That is the NPORS maximum for this category, on the training, the experienced worker test and the refresher alike.

It is also why a squad works out considerably cheaper per head than sending operators out one at a time.
