NPORS N120

NPORS Plant Loader Securer Training (N120)

A machine that moves on a trailer has to be held there by something rated to hold it. Most load security failures are not dramatic: a chain over a track frame instead of a lashing point, a tensioner nobody checked after the first roundabout. Two days, at your own yard, on your own trailers and your own machines.

Acadame is an NPORS approved training provider and test centre, so the training and the test both happen with us and the result goes straight onto the NPORS register. Haulage and depot work is often outside construction site card checking, so the traditional NPORS card frequently suits; the CSCS logo version needs a current CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass, which we book for you.

What makes our N120 Plant Loader Securer different

Rated equipment, used properlyLashing capacity, the right chain or strap for the machine, and a lashing point that was designed to take it. Not whatever is in the locker.
Loading is the dangerous halfRamps, gradients, wet steel and a machine at an angle. Getting plant on and off the trailer gets as much time as tying it down.
On your own trailersBeavertails, low loaders and step frames all secure differently, and so does every machine you carry. We train on the combinations you run.

About this course

The NPORS N120 Plant Loader Securer category covers getting plant onto a transporting vehicle and making it safe to travel: the loading, the positioning, the securing and the checks. It is a task card rather than a machine card, and it is usually taken by the people who do the whole job, drivers, yard staff and fitters, rather than by machine operators alone.

Two days covers the vehicle and the load together. Which trailer suits which machine, where the machine sits for weight distribution and axle loading, and the height, width and length the combination ends up at, which is what decides whether the route is legal at all. Then the securing: lashing capacity and how much restraint a load actually needs, chains, tensioners, webbing and their rated markings, the difference between a lashing point and a convenient piece of steel, blocking and chocking, and the checks after the first few miles.

The rest is the machine itself. Attachments lowered or removed and secured, hydraulics down, quick hitches proved, cabs and doors closed, batteries and isolators, and anything loose on the machine dealt with. Then loading and unloading, which is where people get hurt: ramps and gradients, wet or greasy steel, tracked machines that will not steer on a ramp, a spotter on the ground and an exclusion zone that keeps everybody else out of it.

  • Matching the machine to the vehicle: trailer types, deck space, weight distribution, axle loading and travelling dimensions
  • Loading and unloading safely: ramps, gradients, surface conditions, spotters, exclusion zones and communication
  • Preparing the machine: attachments lowered or removed, hydraulics down, hitches proved, isolators and loose items
  • Securing the load: lashing capacity, chains, tensioners and webbing, rated markings, and choosing the right lashing points
  • How much restraint a load needs and why, and blocking and chocking to prevent movement in every direction
  • Checks before departure and after the first part of the journey, and what to do when something has moved

How completing this course helps you

  • The NPORS N120 Plant Loader Securer category, registered with NPORS and recognised nationally
  • The traditional NPORS card for haulage and depot work, or the CSCS logo version for construction sites
  • People who secure a machine to rated equipment and rated points rather than to habit
  • A defensible answer at the roadside, at the gate and in an insurance claim about who secured the load and how

Who should attend?

Plant hire depots, contractor yards, haulage and transport operators, plant dealers and anyone whose machines move between sites on their own transport. It is taken by drivers, yard staff, fitters and supervisors, and it suits people who have been loading plant for years without a card as much as new starters. Where the same people also move machines around the yard without operating them, the N132 Plant Mover category covers that and the two are often taken together.

Entry requirements. You should be at least eighteen, fit enough for the work including climbing on and around trailers and handling chains and tensioners, and able to follow spoken and written English for the theory test, though an interpreter can be arranged on request. No prior card is required. A driving entitlement matters only where the same person drives the vehicle on the road, which is a separate legal requirement and not something this card covers. For the version of the card that carries the CSCS logo you need a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass at Operatives level within the last two years, which we book for you.

Course content

What you will cover

Classroom on the load, the law and the securing equipment, then practical loading and securing on your own vehicles, with testing at the end.

Theory

The load, the vehicle and the law

  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and PUWER 1998 as they apply to loading and securing
  • Load security expectations set out in the DVSA load securing guidance for vehicle operators
  • Trailer types, deck space, weight distribution, axle loading and travelling height, width and length
  • Lashing equipment: chains, tensioners and webbing, rated capacity, markings, inspection and rejection criteria
  • How much restraint a load needs and in which directions, and the role of blocking and chocking
  • Lashing points on the vehicle and on the machine, and why the wrong point is worse than no point
  • Preparing the machine for travel: attachments, hydraulics, hitches, isolators and loose items
  • Loading and unloading hazards: ramps, gradients, surfaces, spotters, exclusion zones and overhead obstructions
Practical

On, secured, checked

  • Checking the vehicle, the ramps and the securing equipment before anything is loaded
  • Positioning the vehicle, setting the ramps and controlling the area around the operation
  • Loading a machine onto the vehicle under control, with a spotter and agreed signals
  • Preparing the machine for travel and positioning it for weight distribution
  • Securing the machine with rated equipment to rated points, and chocking or blocking where needed
  • Final checks, departure checks and unloading safely at the other end

Method of assessment

How the N120 plant loader securer test works

NPORS assess the category by theory test and practical test. The practical covers loading a machine, preparing it for travel, securing it and carrying out the checks.

1

1. Enquiry and group

Tell us how many people, where, what vehicles and what machines you carry. Three sit the novice course with one instructor, six are allowed on the experienced worker test. We quote per group, because the length follows who is on it.

2

2. Pre course check

We sort who is a novice, who is an experienced worker and who is due a refresher, agree whether the traditional NPORS card or the CSCS logo version fits your work, and take the details NPORS need to register.

3

3. Training

Classroom on the load, the law and the securing equipment, then practical loading and securing, ideally in your own yard on your own trailers and machines.

4

4. Theory test

The NPORS theory test covering legislation and guidance, vehicle and load matching, lashing capacity and equipment, machine preparation and safe loading practice.

5

5. Practical test

Loading a machine, preparing it for travel, securing it with rated equipment to rated points and carrying out the checks, assessed against the NPORS test specification.

6

6. Registration and card

We register the pass with NPORS and apply for the card, traditional or with the CSCS logo depending on where your people work.

After the course

The yard either side of the trailer

Loading and securing sits between two other jobs that are worth looking at together. Before it, somebody has to move the machine to the trailer, and that is a different competence again: the N132 Plant Mover category covers moving plant for non operational duties, which is what a fitter or a yard hand is actually doing when they walk a machine across the yard. After it, the load has to travel, and the driver carries their own legal duties for the vehicle and its load.

The other thing worth having is ramps. Fixed and mobile loading ramps get used daily and inspected rarely, and a machine coming off a ramp that shifted is one of the worst outcomes in this job. If your yard uses mobile ramps, training on their safe use is a short course that closes an obvious gap. We will look at the whole loading operation with you rather than only at the lashings.

  • N132 Plant Mover, non operational duties, for the people who move machines to and from the trailer
  • N045 Safe Use of Mobile Loading Ramps where your yard loads over mobile ramps
  • N403 Vehicle Marshal where loading happens with other vehicle movements around it
  • CITB Health, Safety and Environment test booked with us only where the CSCS logo version of the card is needed

Build your course

Who is coming, and how many

We do not run these to a timetable. The course is built around your people: how experienced they are and how many of them there are, which is what sets the length and the cost. Pick the mix and we will come back with a date and a price.

The course builder needs JavaScript. Without it, tell us how many people and what experience they have and we will price it up.

N120 Plant Loader Securer FAQs

Anyone who loads plant onto a transporting vehicle and secures it for the road: drivers, yard staff, fitters and the supervisors who sign it off. It is a task card rather than a machine card, so it covers the operation rather than a particular machine.

Two days for a novice, with three candidates to one instructor. Somebody already loading and securing daily takes the shorter test focused route, where NPORS allow six candidates, and the refresher is short as well. We confirm the length when we quote.

It covers what the operator needs to know: how much restraint a load needs and why, rated lashing equipment and markings, lashing points, and the expectations set out in the DVSA guidance for vehicle operators. The vehicle operator's own licensing and roadworthiness duties sit outside this card.

No. This is about getting the machine on, secured and checked, and getting it off again. Driving the vehicle on the road needs the right licence entitlement, which is a separate legal requirement and not something an NPORS category covers.

Because a badly prepared machine moves even when the lashings hold. Attachments not lowered or secured, hydraulics left up, a quick hitch nobody proved, a door left swinging or something loose in the cab all cause problems at speed, and they are simple to get right.

Yes, and it is much the best way. Beavertails, low loaders and step frames all secure differently, and so does every machine you carry, so training on your own combinations means the training transfers straight to Monday morning.

For haulage and depot work the traditional NPORS card is normally the right one and does not depend on a CITB test that expires separately. Where the same people also work on construction sites they need the CSCS logo version, which requires a current CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.

Three on the novice course and the refresher, six on the experienced worker test. Bigger groups get sequenced across more than one course, because everybody needs to do the loading and the securing themselves rather than watch it.

NPORS courses are priced per course, not per person. What you are paying for is the instructor, the registered tester and the machine time, so the figure turns on four things: the category, which route your operators need (novice, experienced, conversion or refresher), how many people are coming, and whether we run it on your site or at one of ours. It is also why a squad works out considerably cheaper per head than sending operators out one at a time. Use the course builder on this page: tell it who is coming and it works out how many days the course takes and how many times it has to run, which is what the price is built from. Then ask us and you will get a figure for that exact group rather than a list price with conditions attached.

We run NPORS courses across the UK rather than out of one fixed centre, and for most categories the better answer is that we come to you: your operators are assessed on the machine they will be using anyway, nobody loses a day travelling, and for a group it costs less. If you would rather come to us, we have centres at Trent House in Stoke, Pride Park in Derby, Europa House in Manchester and Kingsway House in Liverpool. Tell us where the work is and we will say honestly which way round makes more sense.

There is no fixed timetable to wait for. NPORS courses here are run to order, which means the dates are built around your programme rather than ours, and a single operator or a full squad can normally be booked in within a couple of weeks. If you have a card about to expire or a start date to hit, say so when you enquire and we will work to it.
