CITB SMSTS Refresher in Derby
Two days at our Derby centre to renew an SMSTS certificate for another five years. These fill up, so book earlier than feels necessary.
About this course
The SMSTS Refresher is two days rather than five, and it is only open to somebody whose existing SMSTS certificate has not yet expired. Once it has, the full five day course is the only way back.
It covers the site manager’s responsibilities, the legislation and guidance that have moved since you last sat it, and the practical management of risk on a live site.
Refresher dates go quickly across the east Midlands because everybody who did SMSTS five years ago needs one at roughly the same time. Booking three months out is not excessive.
The centre is Pride Park, Pride Park, Derby DE24. Pride Park is immediately off the A52 and close to the A6 and the A50, and Derby station is walkable from the centre.
We draw candidates from Burton upon Trent, Nottingham, Loughborough, Ashbourne, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Belper and the wider Derbyshire and east Midlands area. If a date at Derby does not suit, the same course runs at our other centres and we can deliver it at your own premises anywhere in the UK.

Entry requirements. Delegates must have previously completed the five day SMSTS course. Sit the refresher before your certificate expires, otherwise the full course must be taken again.

What to expect on the day
The course is the same wherever you sit it. What changes is the room, the journey and the people in it, and those matter more than providers usually admit.
Our Derby centre is Pride Park, Pride Park, Derby DE24. Pride Park is immediately off the A52 and close to the A6 and the A50, and Derby station is walkable from the centre. Joining instructions go out ahead of the course with timings, what to bring and where to go when you arrive.
If you are booking for a group and travel is the problem, we deliver this course at employers’ own premises anywhere in the country. For six or more people that is usually cheaper per head and nobody loses a day on the road.
Before the day
Joining instructions with timings, the address and what to bring. Tell us at booking if anybody needs support with reading, writing or access and we will sort it quietly.
On the day
Arrive a few minutes early. Bring photographic identification, which most awarding bodies require before they will certificate you.
Afterwards
We tell you the outcome and handle the registration and certification with the awarding body. If anything needs resitting we will get it booked.
Method of assessment
How SMSTS Refresher is assessed
There is an assessment. CITB set it for every Site Safety Plus course and it is taken during or at the end of the course.
Take part in full
CITB require full attendance across the 2 days before the assessment can be taken.
Assessment
CITB standard GET2768. An exam paper at the end of the course, compulsory, 25 questions selected by CITB covering all aspects of the course. The pass mark is 80 per cent.
Certificate
A CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, valid for five years. Renew before it expires or the full course has to be taken again. CITB grant Grant Tier 3 Refresher, 15 learning hours, standard GET2768.

SMSTS Refresher FAQs
The refresher route closes and you need the full five day SMSTS. That is three extra days out, which is why the expiry date is worth diarising the day you pass.
