About this course
Fire warden training is a half day covering the whole job: the weekly checks, the sweep and evacuation, and the roll call and handover to the fire service afterwards.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to make sure everybody can get out safely and to provide adequate fire safety training. Wardens are how that is delivered in practice, and an untrained warden is a name on a list.
The part people remember afterwards is the extinguisher session, and specifically the discussion about when to leave one on the wall. Tackling a fire that has already developed, or picking up the wrong extinguisher, turns a warden into a casualty.
The centre is Pride Park, Pride Park, Derby DE24. Pride Park is immediately off the A52 and close to the A6 and the A50, and Derby station is walkable from the centre.
We draw candidates from Burton upon Trent, Nottingham, Loughborough, Ashbourne, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Belper and the wider Derbyshire and east Midlands area. If a date at Derby does not suit, the same course runs at our other centres and we can deliver it at your own premises anywhere in the UK.

- How fire starts and spreads: the fire triangle, and the four ways fire travels through a building
- The common workplace fire causes, and the housekeeping that removes most of them
- What a fire warden does week to week: checks, obstructions, wedged doors and clutter
- Recognising when a fire door or an escape route has quietly stopped working
- The sweep: your area, the order you do it in, and the places people get missed
- Evacuation, assisting people who need help, and personal emergency evacuation plans
- Roll call at the assembly point, and reporting to the fire service on arrival
- Extinguisher types: water, foam, CO2, dry powder and wet chemical, and what each is for
- When to tackle a fire and, more importantly, when to walk away and close the door

Who should attend?
Appointed fire wardens and marshals across Derby and the east Midlands: offices and professional services, manufacturing and engineering, rail and logistics, schools and colleges, care settings, retail and hospitality. Also supervisors and managers with evacuation duties.
Entry requirements. None. It assumes no previous training and it is written for the people doing the work rather than the people writing the policy.

What to expect on the day
The course is the same wherever you sit it. What changes is the room, the journey and the people in it, and those matter more than providers usually admit.

If you are booking for a group and travel is the problem, we deliver this course at employers’ own premises anywhere in the country. For six or more people that is usually cheaper per head and nobody loses a day on the road.
Before the day
Joining instructions with timings, the address and what to bring. Tell us at booking if anybody needs support with reading, writing or access and we will sort it quietly.
On the day
Arrive a few minutes early. Bring photographic identification, which most awarding bodies require before they will certificate you.
Afterwards
We tell you the outcome and handle the registration and certification with the awarding body. If anything needs resitting we will get it booked.

Method of assessment
How Fire Warden / Marshal is assessed
Assessment is built into the session rather than bolted on. Your trainer checks understanding as you go and there is a short written check at the end.
Scenario work
Working through an evacuation of your own building, or a representative one, including the sweep, a person who cannot use the stairs, and a roll call that does not add up.
Extinguisher identification
Matching extinguisher types to fire classes, and identifying the ones in your own building. Live extinguisher use can be arranged separately where a suitable area is available.
Written check and certificate
A short paper on the duties, the fire triangle and extinguisher selection, then an Acadame certificate. We recommend refreshing it annually.

Fire Warden / Marshal FAQs
Annually is the usual interval, and sooner if the building, the layout or the people change. Pairing the refresher with a fire drill tests the arrangement rather than just the training.
There is no fixed ratio. It comes out of your fire risk assessment: floors, separate areas, shift patterns, holiday cover and whether anybody needs assistance to leave. Most buildings need more than they have.
Yes. For a group it is usually the better option, because the sweep routes, the assembly point and the extinguisher locations are your own, so what people practise is what they will actually do.
