Three days at our Derby centre, and the full workplace first aider qualification for higher risk sites and larger teams across Derbyshire and the east Midlands.
About this course
First Aid at Work is the three day qualification for designated workplace first aiders. It goes a long way past the one day award: fractures and slings, head, spinal and chest injuries, poisoning, anaphylaxis and the major illnesses including heart attack and stroke.
Most of the three days is practical, on the floor, with scenarios drawn from real workplaces rather than a textbook.
Derby employers send first aiders from manufacturing and engineering, rail, logistics, construction and the care sector, where a needs assessment usually points past the one day award.
The centre is Pride Park, Pride Park, Derby DE24. Pride Park is immediately off the A52 and close to the A6 and the A50, and Derby station is walkable from the centre.
We draw candidates from Burton upon Trent, Nottingham, Loughborough, Ashbourne, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Belper and the wider Derbyshire and east Midlands area. If a date at Derby does not suit, the same course runs at our other centres and we can deliver it at your own premises anywhere in the UK.
- The role and responsibilities of a first aider, consent, and minimising the risk of infection
- Assessing an incident: the scene survey, the primary survey, and summoning appropriate assistance
- When to administer CPR, and demonstrating adult CPR on a manikin
- The recovery position, monitoring a casualty in it, and managing a seizure
- Choking, mild and severe, and controlling external bleeding
- Recognising and treating shock, and dealing with minor injuries, burns and scalds
- Conducting a secondary survey, and injuries to bones, muscles and joints including support and elevated slings
- Head and spinal injuries, chest injuries including flail chest and penetrating injury, and eye injuries
- Sudden poisoning, and anaphylaxis including the use of an adrenaline auto injector
- Major illness: heart attack, stroke, epileptic seizure, asthma attack and diabetic emergency

Who should attend?
Designated workplace first aiders across Derby and the east Midlands, plus supervisors, team leaders and health and safety representatives who carry first aid responsibility.
Entry requirements. None. You need to be physically able to carry out practical first aid on the floor, including CPR on a manikin, and to have enough English to follow the training and the written assessment.

What to expect on the day
The course is the same wherever you sit it. What changes is the room, the journey and the people in it, and those matter more than providers usually admit.
Our Derby centre is Pride Park, Pride Park, Derby DE24. Pride Park is immediately off the A52 and close to the A6 and the A50, and Derby station is walkable from the centre. Joining instructions go out ahead of the course with timings, what to bring and where to go when you arrive.
If you are booking for a group and travel is the problem, we deliver this course at employers’ own premises anywhere in the country. For six or more people that is usually cheaper per head and nobody loses a day on the road.
Before the day
Joining instructions with timings, the address and what to bring. Tell us at booking if anybody needs support with reading, writing or access and we will sort it quietly.
On the day
Arrive a few minutes early. Bring photographic identification, which most awarding bodies require before they will certificate you.
Afterwards
We tell you the outcome and handle the registration and certification with the awarding body. If anything needs resitting we will get it booked.
Course content
What you will cover
The qualification is structured around the management of health and safety and the practical application of risk assessment.
The first aider and the incident
- The role and responsibilities of a first aider
- How to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
- The need for consent to provide first aid
- Conducting a scene survey
- Conducting a primary survey of a casualty
- Summoning appropriate assistance when necessary
Life threatening emergencies
- When to administer CPR, and demonstrating adult CPR on a manikin
- When to place a casualty into the recovery position, and demonstrating it
- First aid for a casualty who is experiencing a seizure
- Choking, mild and severe
- Identifying the severity of external bleeding and controlling it
- Recognising and treating shock
Injuries
- Minor injuries: small cuts, grazes, bruises and small splinters
- Minor burns and scalds in line with accepted current practice
- Conducting a head to toe secondary survey
- Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
- Applying a support sling and an elevated sling
- Suspected head and spinal injuries
- Suspected chest injuries, including flail chest and penetrating chest injury
- Burns and scalds, and the factors affecting their severity
- Eye injuries: dust, chemicals and embedded objects
Poisoning, anaphylaxis and major illness
- The routes poisons take into the body, and first aid for sudden poisoning
- Sources of information for treating poisoning
- Common triggers for anaphylaxis and recognising it
- Using an adrenaline auto injector training device
- Heart attack and stroke
- Epileptic seizure, asthma attack and diabetic emergency
Method of assessment
How First Aid at Work is assessed
Two steps. Practical observation through the three days, then a written paper at the end.
Practical observations
You are observed carrying out the scene and primary survey, summoning assistance, adult CPR on a manikin, the recovery position and monitoring, choking, identifying and controlling life threatening external bleeding, a head to toe survey, support and elevated slings, suspected spinal injury management, and use of a training adrenaline auto injector.
Multiple choice examination
A forty question multiple choice paper. The pass mark is twenty eight correct answers and the maximum time allowed is sixty minutes.
Certification
Issued by QNUK and valid for three years. Requalification is the two day First Aid at Work Requalification, and it must be done before the certificate expires.

First Aid at Work FAQs
Three years. HSE guidance also recommends an annual refresher in between, which is a separate half day and a regulated qualification in its own right.
There is no legal number. It falls out of your own first aid needs assessment: hazards, headcount, shift patterns, lone workers, site layout and distance from help. Most employers train above the minimum so that holidays do not leave them uncovered.
