About this course

SMSTS is the management level course in the CITB Site Safety Plus scheme. Five days, and a certificate that lasts five years. It is the one most principal contractors ask for before they will let somebody run a site.

It goes well beyond the supervisor course. The Construction Design and Management Regulations and what they make you responsible for, planning and monitoring the work rather than reacting to it, occupational health, and the high risk activities that account for most of the deaths in the industry: working at height, excavations, confined spaces, temporary works and demolition.

Our Liverpool centre is Kingsway House on Caldwell Road in Widnes, WA8 7EA. We call it Liverpool because that is the area it serves, but the building is in Widnes rather than the city itself, which is worth knowing before a five day booking.

Widnes sits by the Silver Jubilee and Mersey Gateway crossings, minutes from the A557 and the M62, with Widnes and Hough Green stations nearby. People travel in from Widnes, Runcorn, St Helens, Warrington, Speke, Halewood, Knowsley, Ellesmere Port and the wider Merseyside and north Cheshire area.

If the dates below do not suit, we run SMSTS at Stoke-on-Trent, Derby and Manchester too, and we will bring it to your own site anywhere in the UK.

  • Manage and implement health, safety and environmental aspects on site in accordance with current legal provisions and within the context of their management role
  • Implement new guidance and industry best practice
  • Develop an understanding of responsibility and accountability for site health, safety, welfare and the environment
  • Recognise that a safe site is efficient, economical, productive and environmentally friendly

How completing this course helps you

  • Hold a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, recognised on sites across the UK
  • Show the card checker and your employer that the training is current
  • Renew before the five years are up rather than starting again

Who should attend?

Entry requirements. None formally. Delegates should hold, or be about to hold, the role of a site manager, and previous health and safety knowledge is recommended.

At Liverpool

What to expect on the day

The course is the same wherever you sit it. What changes is the room, the journey and the people in it, and over five days that adds up.

Kingsway House has proper training rooms, parking, and refreshments and course materials included. Bring photo ID, because CITB require us to check it before you sit.

Start is 8.30am unless your joining instructions say otherwise. Five days, usually consecutive, and there is written work in the evenings. Attendance on all five is required.

1

Get the certificate the site is asking for

Five days, in the classroom or live online. SMSTS is valid for five years and a two day refresher keeps it current.

2

Build the NVQ around the job you are doing

A Level 6 NVQ in Construction Site Management is assessed on your own projects. No exams and no day release. Your assessor works to your programme.

3

Sit the managers test

The CITB Managers and Professionals health, safety and environment test, which is the one CSCS need for this card rather than the operatives test.

4

Apply for the black card

With the NVQ and the test in hand, apply to CSCS. The black Manager card runs for five years.

Method of assessment

How SMSTS is assessed

There is an assessment. CITB set it for every Site Safety Plus course and it is taken during or at the end of the course.

1

Take part in full

CITB require full attendance across the 5 days before the assessment can be taken.

2

Assessment

CITB standard GET0039, Health and Safety in Construction Site Management (SSP). An end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures the learning outcomes, with a pass or fail criteria.

3

Certificate

A CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, valid for five years. Renew before it expires or the full course has to be taken again. CITB grant Grant Tier 3, 37.5 learning hours, standard GET0039.

SMSTS FAQs

No. SMSTS is a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, not a card. The black Manager card is issued against a construction management or technical NVQ at Level 4, 5, 6 or 7, together with a pass in the CITB Managers and Professionals health, safety and environment test.

Because it is the management safety training the industry recognises, and principal contractors write it into site rules alongside the card that matches the role. The card says what you are qualified to do. The certificate says your training is current.

Five years. A two day SMSTS refresher taken before it expires keeps it running for another five. Let it lapse and the full five day course has to be taken again.

For most site managers it is the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management. Contracts managers and directors usually go to Level 7. Both are assessed on your own projects rather than in a classroom.

The CITB Managers and Professionals test, not the operatives test. CSCS need a pass from within the last two years at the point you apply.

Kingsway House, Caldwell Road, Widnes WA8 7EA. It is in Widnes rather than Liverpool itself. Minutes from the A557 and the M62, by the Silver Jubilee and Mersey Gateway crossings, with Widnes and Hough Green stations nearby.

Because of where the work is and where people drive from. Widnes sits between Liverpool, Runcorn, Warrington and St Helens with the crossings and the M62 on the doorstep, and there is parking. Over five days that is worth more than a city centre postcode.

Usually yes, and that is how the scheduled dates run. Split delivery is possible in some circumstances but CITB set rules on how far apart the days can be, so talk to us before you plan around it rather than after.

Yes, and it is two days rather than five. It renews a certificate that has not yet expired. If yours has already run out, the refresher will not do and you need the full five day course again.
