Deliver SMSTS, SMSTS Refresher, SSSTS, SSSTS Refresher, Health and Safety Awareness and the Directors Role for Health and Safety, at our centres and on client sites across the UK. Mandatory: CITB requires at least three years of occupational experience in a construction management role, evidenced by a verifiable CV. CITB states explicitly that health and safety advisers and consultants do not meet this requirement, so a NEBOSH qualification on its own is not enough.

What you would be delivering

Site Safety Plus courses at our four centres and on client sites, usually in blocks rather than odd days.

SMSTS, five days, and SMSTS Refresher
SSSTS, two days, and SSSTS Refresher
Health and Safety Awareness, one day
Directors Role for Health and Safety
Temporary Works Co-ordinator, two days, and the one day Refresher
Temporary Works Supervisor, one day

Freelance work is offered in advance and you take what suits you, with no minimum commitment. If you would rather be employed, say so and we will talk about a permanent contract instead.

Temporary works is what we are short of

We have SMSTS and SSSTS covered. What we are short of is temporary works, so if you can deliver the Temporary Works Co-ordinator and Temporary Works Supervisor courses you go straight to the top of the pile.

Be aware before you apply that CITB treats temporary works as a separate approval with its own criteria, and they are engineering criteria rather than health and safety ones. The list below comes from Site Safety Plus Scheme Rules Appendix L and Appendix M. We are quoting CITB rather than inventing our own bar.

Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE or FICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE or FIStructE) or the Institution of Royal Engineers
Registration with the Engineering Council at IEng or CEng level
Relevant practical and design experience of temporary works: falsework, formwork, access and protection
You must have attended and achieved the course yourself, or one above it in the temporary works suite

A health and safety qualification is good practice here but CITB does not make it mandatory for temporary works, which is the opposite way round to the rest of Site Safety Plus. If you are a chartered or incorporated engineer who has moved into training, this is the part of the job we most want to talk to you about.

What CITB requires of you

These come from the CITB Site Safety Plus Quality Assurance Requirements, May 2026. We are quoting them rather than inventing our own bar.

A teaching or training qualification equivalent to a Level 3 Award in Education and Training, or a CITB recognised exemption such as CET Level 4, PTLLS, PGCE or the legacy City and Guilds 7300, 7302, 7303, 7307 or 7407
One of the accepted health and safety qualifications: NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction (UK), NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Safety and Health, NEBOSH Diploma, Level 3 (S)NVQ in Occupational Safety and Health, Level 4 Health and Safety Management for Construction, Level 6 Diploma in Safety Management or the NCRQ Level 6 Diploma
At least three years in a construction management role, on a verifiable CV. Health and safety advisers and consultants are excluded by CITB
If you are new to the scheme, a current certificate at or above the level of the course you will deliver. An SMSTS trainer needs a current SMSTS
CPD. If you hold IOSH membership your records cover it; if not, CITB asks for not less than 35 hours

Health and Safety Awareness is the one exception on experience: two years of verifiable construction experience at or above the level of the course.

How approval actually works

This is worth being straight about, because it catches people out.

CITB approval is held through a provider, not by you personally. You cannot arrive already approved in the abstract
We register you to Acadame, submit your CV and evidence, and CITB carries out its own due diligence
If CITB wants to verify your experience it asks for a professional interview by video link, at our cost, and its decision is final
If you are already registered with another provider for the same courses there is no additional fee, but you must declare it, and so must we

We pay the registration. You do not.

What we will ask you for

A CV that shows the construction management experience clearly, with dates and employers we can check
Certificates for your teaching qualification, your health and safety qualification and the SSP courses you hold
For temporary works, your institution membership and your Engineering Council registration number, plus examples of temporary works you have designed or co-ordinated
Your CPD record, or your IOSH membership number
Two references, at least one from a training provider or a site you have worked on

Being observed

CITB carries out announced and unannounced observations of delivery, and interviews trainers and delegates. We also sit in on your first course with us, which is for both our benefit.

Photographic ID badges are worn on every course. We issue yours
You report anything that goes wrong on a course to us the same day, not at the end of the month
