Freelance construction NVQ assessor

Assess construction NVQs from Level 2 through to Level 7, in the workplace and remotely, for candidates working towards CSCS cards and professional recognition.

Mandatory: You must be occupationally competent at or above the level you are assessing. This is the CITB requirement, and it is the one we cannot flex on: an assessor for a Level 6 or Level 7 management NVQ has to evidence competence at that level.

What you would be assessing

We run construction NVQs across the trades and up through supervisory, management and professional levels.

Level 2 and Level 3 trade NVQs, including bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering and groundworks
Level 3 and Level 4 supervisory and technical
Level 5 and Level 6 construction site management and contracting operations management
Level 7 construction senior management
You assess only in your acknowledged area of occupational competence. Nobody here will ask you to sign off something you are not competent in.

What you need to hold

Taken from the CITB Consolidated Assessment Strategy for Construction. The two qualifications below are the ones accepted by every awarding organisation we work with, so they are the safe answer.

Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment, or
Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement
Verifiable, current industry experience at or above the level you assess, with enough depth to judge competence reliably
A CPD record, or membership of a relevant professional institution

You can be registered and working towards the assessor qualification rather than holding it already. CITB sets no deadline for finishing it; we ask you to agree one with us and you countersign with a qualified assessor until you do.

About legacy awards

If you hold A1, A2 or D32 and D33, do apply, but read this first.

The 2020 CITB strategy accepted them, on condition that you assess to the current National Occupational Standards for Learning and Development
The December 2025 strategy no longer lists them, and points instead to a separate Assessor and Verifier Competence document
Acceptance now varies by awarding organisation. City and Guilds still lists them; others do not
We will check your position against the specific awarding organisation before we put you in front of a portfolio, and we will tell you straight if you need to update

How the work comes

Portfolios are allocated in batches, not one at a time, so a trip is worth making
Evidence is gathered remotely wherever it can be, with site visits where it genuinely needs eyes on
Internal quality assurance is ours. You are sampled, and you will get the feedback in writing
If you also hold the Level 4 IQA award, say so. We are usually short of IQAs as well

Your assessor certificate, or your registration if you are working towards it
Evidence of occupational competence at the levels you want to assess: qualifications, a CV, or professional membership
Your CPD record
