  • Teachers and subject leaders
  • Science, technology and PE staff
  • Site and premises managers
  • Educational visits coordinators
  • School business managers and bursars
  • Governors with a health and safety remit

Hazard, risk and who might be harmed

Hazard and risk in a school context, the duty to assess, and the pupils, staff and visitors who might be harmed.

2

3

Premises and grounds

Your legal duty

The law behind risk assessment in education training

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require every employer to assess the risks to employees and to anyone else affected by their work. In a school, that second group is mostly pupils and visitors, which is why school assessments look different from an office's.

Who the employer is varies by school type, and national and local guidance sits on top of the general duty, particularly for educational visits. Your own policy and your local authority or trust are the reference point for that.

  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 - the duty to assess
  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 - sections 2 and 3
  • Pupils and visitors are the people most affected by a school's undertaking
  • Educational visits also follow national and local guidance

  • Completion and expiry reporting for your records
  • Renewal reminders before certificates lapse
  • Bespoke versions built around your own procedures

Risk Assessment in Education eLearning: common questions

Yes. Schools are employers and the duty to assess risks to employees and to others affected applies in full, which in a school means pupils and visitors as well as staff.

In practice, teachers, subject leaders and site staff. This course is aimed at exactly those people, because the duty usually lands on them without any training.

It covers the principles of off-site assessment. Detailed educational visit procedures follow national and local guidance and your own school policy.

Suitable and sufficient, and proportionate to the risk. A low-risk classroom does not need what a technology workshop needs, and the course covers how to judge that.

About 30 to 45 minutes, with no time limit: start it, pause it, and come back whenever suits. The certificate is issued as soon as you pass the end assessment.

Yes. It runs in a browser on any modern phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to install.

Yes. Open a business account and we invoice you for the licences, which you allocate as people need them, with completion reporting included.
