About this course
This five day course is for site managers and supervisors and covers legal responsibilities, health and safety law, the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, risk assessments, site setup, managing hazards, occupational health and environmental issues.
It focuses on planning, monitoring and controlling safety on construction sites, promoting a positive safety culture, and ensuring compliance with UK legislation.
Anyone without previous health and safety management experience is recommended to sit the two day SSSTS course first.

Who should attend?
Ideal for anyone taking on, or already holding, responsibility for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and administering groups of staff, for example a site manager.
Entry requirements. None formally. Delegates should hold, or be about to hold, the role of a site manager, and previous health and safety knowledge is recommended.

Cards and qualifications
SMSTS, and how the black CSCS Manager card actually works
SMSTS does not award a CSCS card. It is a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, valid for five years, and it is evidence of management safety training rather than evidence of occupational competence. No Site Safety Plus course awards a card.
Sites ask for it anyway, and most ask for both. Principal contractors write SMSTS into the site rules for anyone managing a site, alongside the card that matches the role, which is why site managers end up carrying the certificate and the card together.
The black Manager card comes from a construction management or technical NVQ at Level 4, 5, 6 or 7, plus a pass in the CITB Managers and Professionals health, safety and environment test. We deliver the course and the NVQ, so the two can run alongside each other.
Get the certificate the site is asking for
Five days, in the classroom or live online. SMSTS is valid for five years and a two day refresher keeps it current.
Build the NVQ around the job you are doing
A Level 6 NVQ in Construction Site Management is assessed on your own projects. No exams and no day release. Your assessor works to your programme.
Sit the managers test
The CITB Managers and Professionals health, safety and environment test, which is the one CSCS need for this card rather than the operatives test.
Apply for the black card
With the NVQ and the test in hand, apply to CSCS. The black Manager card runs for five years.
Method of assessment
How SMSTS is assessed
There is an assessment. CITB set it for every Site Safety Plus course and it is taken during or at the end of the course.
Take part in full
CITB require full attendance across the 5 days before the assessment can be taken.
Assessment
CITB standard GET0039, Health and Safety in Construction Site Management (SSP). An end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures the learning outcomes, with a pass or fail criteria.
Certificate
A CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, valid for five years. Renew before it expires or the full course has to be taken again. CITB grant Grant Tier 3, 37.5 learning hours, standard GET0039.

SMSTS FAQs
No. SMSTS is a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, not a card. The black Manager card is issued against a construction management or technical NVQ at Level 4, 5, 6 or 7, together with a pass in the CITB Managers and Professionals health, safety and environment test.
Because it is the management safety training the industry recognises, and principal contractors write it into site rules alongside the card that matches the role. The card says what you are qualified to do. The certificate says your training is current.
Five years. A two day SMSTS refresher taken before it expires keeps it running for another five. Let it lapse and the full five day course has to be taken again.
For most site managers it is the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management. Contracts managers and directors usually go to Level 7. Both are assessed on your own projects rather than in a classroom.
The CITB Managers and Professionals test, not the operatives test. CSCS need a pass from within the last two years at the point you apply.
