The NPORS N704 Manual Handling course is designed to equip operatives with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to perform manual handling tasks safely and efficiently. This half-day programme provides a comprehensive understanding of manual handling principles, including the anatomy of the spine, risk assessment techniques, and the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Participants will learn to identify potential hazards, understand the implications of poor manual handling practices, and apply safe lifting techniques in various work environments. Upon successful completion, candidates will be better prepared to minimise the risk of injury and contribute to a safer workplace.

Course Content
  • Understand the industry, associated hazards, and operator responsibilities. 
  • State the definition of manual handling, the main causes of manual handling injuries, and the reasons for manual handling training. 
  • Describe the function and shape of the human spine. 
  • Describe the function of the intervertebral discs. 
  • Understand the effects of static loading and the risks involved in team lifting. 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of formal and dynamic risk assessment. 
  • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for manual handling operations. 
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area. 
  • Describe and demonstrate safe handling techniques and mechanical aids. 
  • Understand the legal obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Manual Handling Operations Regulations.
Methods of Assessment

The method of assessment is a three-step journey:

A written assessment covering regulations, machine controls, and operational safety.

Candidates will demonstrate the safe operation of the tool, including pre-operational checks and performing tasks.

Candidates will showcase proper shutdown techniques to ensure safety and compliance.
