Outcomes

What you will be able to do

  • Explain what makes a space a confined space in law
  • Recognise the specified risks and hidden dangers
  • Explain the duties under the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997
  • Describe how a safe system of work controls entry
  • Respond safely to a confined space emergency

Your legal duty

The law behind this training

The Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 and HSE's Approved Code of Practice L101 set out the duties: avoid entry where you can, and where you cannot, work only to a safe system of work with emergency arrangements in place. This course is the awareness that sits behind those duties.

It is awareness training only. It does not qualify anyone to enter, work in or rescue from a confined space. Entry needs specific training, a safe system of work, and emergency arrangements in place first, and you never enter to rescue someone without the right training and equipment: raise the alarm instead.

  • Confined Spaces Regulations 1997
  • HSE Approved Code of Practice L101
