DSEAR eLearning
Online DSEAR training on dangerous substances and explosive atmospheres: flammable liquids, gases and combustible dusts, and the zoning and controls that keep them from igniting.
Who it is for
Who this DSEAR course is for
DSEAR catches far more workplaces than people expect. Fuel storage, paint spraying, solvent cleaning, LPG, welding gases, woodworking dust and flour handling all fall inside it.
- Manufacturing, process and chemical plant staff
- Fuel, LPG and tank farm operatives
- Paint spraying, coating and solvent users
- Woodworking, milling and food processing staff
- Maintenance teams doing hot work
- Supervisors responsible for zoning and permits
Course content
What the DSEAR course covers
Five short lessons covering dangerous substances, how explosive atmospheres form and ignite, risk assessment and control, zoning and equipment, and hot work and emergencies, then a 12-question assessment.
Dangerous substances
Flammable liquids, gases and combustible dusts, and flash point in plain terms.
How explosive atmospheres form and ignite
Explosive limits, dust clouds, secondary explosions, and ignition sources including static.
Risk assessment and control
What a DSEAR assessment covers, and eliminate, reduce, control and mitigate.
Zoning, equipment and signage
Zones 0, 1, 2 and 20, 21, 22, ATEX-rated equipment, and the EX sign.
Hot work and emergencies
Permits for hot work, controlling work in and near zones, and emergency arrangements.
Outcomes
What you will be able to do afterwards
- Recognise dangerous substances covered by DSEAR
- Explain how explosive atmospheres form and ignite
- Describe how DSEAR risks are assessed and controlled
- Recognise hazardous zones, ATEX equipment and the EX sign
- Control hot work and know the emergency arrangements
Your legal duty
The law behind DSEAR training
The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 require employers to assess the risks from dangerous substances, eliminate or reduce them, classify places where explosive atmospheres may occur into zones, select suitable equipment for those zones, and provide employees with information, instruction and training.
DSEAR overlaps with COSHH and with fire safety law without replacing either. COSHH deals with harm to health from substances; DSEAR deals with fire, explosion and similar energetic events.
- Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR)
- Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 - harm to health
- Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 - fire safety in England and Wales
- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 - risk assessment
Practicalities
How the course works
Would you rather have a tutor?
COSHH covers the health effects of the same substances DSEAR treats as a fire and explosion risk.
For employers
DSEAR training for a site team
DSEAR awareness matters most for the people who work in or near zoned areas, and for the maintenance teams who bring ignition sources into them.
- One invoice instead of a card payment per person
- Licences allocated as people join, so induction is covered
- Completion and expiry reporting for your records
- Renewal reminders before certificates lapse
- Bespoke versions built around your own procedures
DSEAR eLearning: common questions
Any substance or preparation that could create a risk from fire, explosion or a similar energetic event: flammable liquids and gases, and combustible dusts among them.
Yes. Combustible dusts such as flour, sugar, wood and some metals can form explosive atmospheres, and dust explosions are among the most destructive workplace incidents.
Classifying places where an explosive atmosphere may occur, so that equipment brought into them is suitable and ignition sources are controlled. The course explains how zones work.
No. They cover different harms from the same substances - COSHH deals with health effects, DSEAR with fire and explosion. Most sites need both.
About 30 to 45 minutes, with no time limit: start it, pause it, and come back whenever suits. The certificate is issued as soon as you pass the end assessment.
Yes. It runs in a browser on any modern phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to install.
Yes. Open a business account and we invoice you for the licences, which you allocate as people need them, with completion reporting included.
