Element 2: Dealing With Common Workplace Hazards

Cover a broad range of workplace hazards including slips and trips, stress, violence and aggression, hazardous substances, DSE, substance misuse, electricity, fire, manual handling, noise, vibration, work equipment, work at height, and workplace transport.

Element 3: Stopping Incidents And Ill-Health Before They Happen

Understand workplace inspections, worker involvement, practical checklists, and the principles of sensible risk assessment.

Element 4: Learning From Incidents

Learn why incidents should be investigated, how a simple investigation process works, and how root causes can be explored using methods such as the 5 Whys.

The qualification is assessed by one 30-minute online multiple-format assessment. NEBOSH explains that “multiple format” includes question types such as multiple choice, multiple response, ranking, categorising, and fill-in-the-blanks. The paper contains 20 questions, all of which are compulsory, and the assessment is closed book. Candidates must achieve 60% or higher to pass.

Assessments are held monthly and are available during a 24-hour window, although candidates still have only 30 minutes total to complete the paper once started. Results are normally issued within 15 working days, and successful candidates receive a qualification parchment, usually within 20 working days of confirmation of a pass.

This qualification is designed for health and safety professionals and other workers involved in managing premises that fall under the standard duty requirements of the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025. 

What Are Standard Duty Premises Under Martyn’s Law?

NEBOSH states that standard tier premises are certain publicly accessible premises where it is reasonable to expect between 200 and 799 individuals may be present at the same time. 

How Long Is The Course?

The qualification is based on 6 taught hours and 0.5 hours for assessment, so it is typically delivered as a one-day course. 

How Is The Qualification Assessed?

Assessment is by a 30-minute online multiple-format assessment. The exam includes 20 compulsory questions and is completed as a closed-book assessment. 

What Mark Do I Need To Pass?

Candidates need to achieve a pass mark of 60% or higher.

What Topics Are Covered?

The course covers the nature of terrorism and the legal framework, identifying and monitoring threats, understanding threats and site vulnerabilities, implementing public protection procedures, and developing a strong security culture.

Does The Course Cover Emergency Response?

Yes. The syllabus includes recognising emergency response options for different types of terrorist threat, internal and external communication processes, and trauma first aid and worker competency in the event of an attack. 

Is This A Security Qualification?

It is better described as a terrorism awareness and public protection qualification for those managing standard duty premises. It supports compliance and preparedness, but it is not intended as an advanced operational qualification for experienced security professionals. 

When Will I Receive My Result?

NEBOSH says results are normally issued within 15 working days of sitting the assessment, and the qualification parchment is normally issued within 20 working days of confirmation of a successful result.
