About this course
Most workplace risk assessments are not wrong. They are just not useful: copied from a template, listing hazards nobody disputes, recommending controls nobody implements, and reviewed by changing the date. The NEBOSH HSE Award in Managing Risks and Risk Assessment at Work exists to fix that.
It was developed by NEBOSH in collaboration with the Health and Safety Executive, which shows in the content. It is not academic. It works through why risk assessments matter, when one is actually required, how to identify hazards properly, how to judge risk, and how to pick controls using the hierarchy rather than jumping to personal protective equipment.
It spends real time on the two things that separate a good assessment from a bad one: consulting the people doing the work, and reviewing the assessment when something changes rather than annually out of habit.
Assessment is a practical scenario based exercise, open book, with no written examination. Results are typically back within 24 working days.
It suits managers, supervisors, team leaders, safety representatives, facilities and HR staff, and it is a sensible run up to the National General Certificate for anybody thinking about going further.

Entry requirements. None. No previous health and safety qualifications are required and no workplace submission is needed, because assessment is a scenario based practical exercise rather than a workplace project.

Award or Certificate
An Award is not a Certificate, and that is fine
NEBOSH Awards and Certificates sit at different levels and do different jobs. An Award is short, focused and graded Pass or Refer. A Certificate is longer, broader and graded Pass, Credit or Distinction.
This Award does one thing: it makes somebody good at risk assessment. That is often exactly what an organisation needs, and it is considerably better value than sending ten supervisors on a certificate course they do not need.
If what you actually need is a competent person under the Management Regulations 1999, or a qualification that opens health and safety job doors, that is the National General Certificate. A lot of people take this Award first and find it makes the Certificate far less daunting.

Practical scenario based assessment
You work through a realistic workplace scenario and produce a risk assessment from it. Open book, because the point is whether you can do it rather than whether you memorised the hierarchy of control.
No written examination
There is no closed book paper and no separate workplace project to submit afterwards.

No. This is an Award: one day, focused entirely on risk assessment, graded Pass or Refer. The National General Certificate is a certificate level qualification covering the whole of health and safety management, taking 80 to 130 guided learning hours and graded Pass, Credit or Distinction.
Indirectly. It builds general risk assessment competence, which the Martyn’s Law duties draw on, but it does not cover terrorism preparedness or the specific obligations of the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025. For that you want the standard or enhanced duty certificate, and a fair number of organisations take both.
