NPORS N205

NPORS Rear Tipping Dumper Training (N205)

The articulated dump truck moving bulk muck on earthworks, quarries and landfill, tipping to the rear off a tip head with the body in the air. Four days covers haul road discipline, the blind spots on a machine that size, and the two moments that kill people on these trucks: reversing to an edge, and a raised body. Run on request, on your own trucks.

What makes our N205 Rear Tipping Dumper different

The tip head is the dangerous partReversing blind to an edge and then putting the body in the air is where these trucks go over or drop off. The course builds the whole discharge sequence around that.
On your own haul roadsGradients, cambers, passing places and the state of the running surface are site specific. Training on your ground teaches the route your drivers will actually run.
Six on the experienced worker testQuarry and earthworks crews are usually already driving. NPORS allow six through the test in a session, so a shift can be carded without losing a week.
Honest about the lengthNPORS publish minimum hours by group size, and three novices on a dump truck need considerably more than four days. We say so before you book, not after.

About this course

The NPORS N205 Rear Tipping Dumper category covers the large dump trucks that shift bulk material rather than site sized loads: the articulated dump truck most people call an ADT, and rigid machines of the same family, loaded by an excavator or a loading shovel and discharged over the back with the body raised. They work earthworks, quarries, landfill, opencast and major infrastructure, usually on a defined haul route, usually in a cycle that repeats all day.

Four days is spent on the things that make a big truck different from a site dumper. Mass and momentum: braking distances, retarders and engine braking on a descent, and why speed on a haul road is a design decision rather than a driver's choice. Haul road discipline: gradients, cambers, passing places, the running surface, edge protection and what a rutted or greasy road does to a loaded machine. Visibility: blind spots on a machine that size are measured in metres, and mirrors, cameras and the rule about never assuming a person on foot has seen you carry real weight.

Then the tip head, which is where the serious incidents happen. Reversing to an edge you cannot see over, tipping with a body in the air on ground that may be soft or uneven, the stability of a raised body in wind, overhead services above a raised body, material hanging up in the body and the machine sitting nose high when it comes free. A designated tipping position, a substantial stop block or bund, a spotter where the site requires one and an exclusion zone are all part of the practical, not just the classroom.

  • The machine: articulation and oscillation, body and tipping rams, drivetrain, brakes and retarder, ROPS and FOPS, the seat belt and the controls
  • Capacities and loading: rated payload, even load distribution, what an excavator operator can and cannot see, and why an overloaded body changes braking and stability
  • Haul roads: gradients, cambers, running surface, passing places, one way systems, speed, edge protection and travelling loaded and empty
  • Visibility and people: blind spots on a large machine, mirrors and cameras, signals, exclusion zones and never relying on a pedestrian having seen you
  • Discharge at a tip head: designated tipping positions, stop blocks and bunds, ground under the wheels, raised body stability, wind, overhead services and material hanging up
  • Pre use and running checks, defect reporting, refuelling and spills, and the operator's duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, PUWER 1998 and CDM 2015

How completing this course helps you

  • The NPORS N205 Rear Tipping Dumper category, registered with NPORS and recognised nationally
  • An NPORS Red Trained Operator card, or a Blue Competent Operator card where you hold the relevant NVQ, carrying the CSCS logo while your CITB Health, Safety and Environment test is in date
  • Drivers who treat the tip head as a set procedure rather than a habit, and who bring the body down before they move
  • A record of training and assessment that stands up when a principal contractor or a quarry operator asks for it

Who should attend?

Earthworks and civils contractors, quarry and mineral operators, landfill and waste sites, opencast, major infrastructure and bulk muck shifting gangs, plant hire companies and drivers moving up from a site dumper to a dump truck. Anyone loading, hauling and tipping bulk material on a defined haul route. If the machine you run is a forward tipping site dumper with the skip in front of you, that is the N204 category instead, and the two are not interchangeable.

Entry requirements. You should be at least eighteen, fit enough to climb to and from a high cab repeatedly and to work a full shift, and able to follow spoken and written English well enough for the theory test, though we can arrange an interpreter or a reader on request. We are not aware of NPORS setting a licence or medical requirement for the category itself, and the employer's own fitness and licensing rules still apply, with quarry operators and principal contractors frequently setting eyesight and medical standards of their own. We will work to whatever your site requires. For the version of the card that carries the CSCS logo you need a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass at Operatives level taken within the last two years, which we book for you. Tell us at enquiry what trucks you run and their size, and whether training will be on your haul roads.

Course content

What you will cover

Classroom on the machine, loading, haul roads and the law, then the rest of the time on the truck running a loading and tipping cycle, with theory and practical testing at the end.

Theory

The truck, the haul road and the tip head

  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, PUWER 1998 and CDM 2015 as they apply to a dump truck driver
  • The operator handbook, rated payload, load distribution and the consequences of overloading
  • Major components: articulation and oscillation, body and rams, drivetrain, service and park brakes, retarder, ROPS, FOPS and seat belt
  • Stability loaded, unloaded and with the body raised, on gradients, cambers and soft or uneven ground
  • Haul road standards, speed, gradients, passing places, one way systems and edge protection
  • Blind spots and visibility aids, pedestrian and plant segregation, signals and exclusion zones
  • Tipping at an edge: designated positions, stop blocks and bunds, overhead services, wind on a raised body and material hanging up
  • Pre use and running checks, defect reporting, refuelling, spills and environmental controls
Practical

On the truck

  • Pre use checks of the machine, fluids, tyres, brakes, body and rams, ROPS and seat belt, and reporting a defect
  • Mounting and dismounting using three points of contact, seat and belt adjustment, starting and shutting down
  • Positioning under an excavator or loading shovel to receive a load, and checking it is within capacity and evenly distributed
  • Travelling a haul route loaded and empty, on gradients, using retarder and engine braking appropriately
  • Manoeuvring in restricted space and reversing under control with mirrors, cameras and a spotter where the site requires one
  • Approaching and reversing to a tip head behind stop blocks, discharging with the body raised, then lowering before moving off
  • Parking on level ground, applying the park brake, securing the machine and leaving it safe

Method of assessment

How the N205 rear tipping dumper test works

NPORS assess the category by theory test and practical test. Training and assessment run together, and the practical is carried out on the size and type of truck your drivers actually run.

1

1. Enquiry and group

Tell us how many drivers, where, and what trucks you run. Three sit the novice course with one instructor and one machine, six can sit the experienced worker test. We quote per group, because the length follows who is on the course.

2

2. Pre course check

We work out who is a genuine novice, who is an experienced worker and who is due a refresher, check whether the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test is in date for the CSCS logo version of the card, check any site medical or eyesight requirement, and take the details NPORS need.

3

3. Training

Classroom on the machine, loading, haul roads and the duties, then the rest of the time on the truck running a real cycle. Where we are on your site we use your haul roads, your loading point and your tip head.

4

4. Theory test

The NPORS theory test, open questions and multiple choice, covering legislation, components, payload and load distribution, haul road and tip head safety, visibility and stability with the body raised.

5

5. Practical test

You carry out pre use checks, position to receive a load, travel a haul route loaded and empty, manoeuvre and reverse under control and discharge at a tip head, assessed against the NPORS test specification.

6

6. Registration and card

We register the pass with NPORS and apply for your card. With a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment test it carries the CSCS logo, as a Red Trained Operator card or a Blue Competent Operator card if you hold the relevant NVQ.

After the course

A carded driver on a badly built haul road is still a problem

The industry guidance on dumpers is blunt that most incidents come from planning, supervision, machine selection and the ground rather than from the driver's hands. A dump truck exposes that faster than anything else on site, because the machine is heavy, the cycle repeats and any fault in the haul road gets driven over a hundred times a shift. Training a driver properly and then running them on a rutted, badly cambered road with no edge protection at the tip head does not get you a safe operation.

Familiarisation on the specific machine matters too. Retarder behaviour, body controls, camera layout and the feel of the articulation differ between makes and models, and a driver moving from one fleet to another needs time on the new truck before they are running a full cycle. We build that into the course where you are taking delivery of something unfamiliar, and we can cover the tip head procedure your site actually uses rather than a generic one.

  • N204 Forward Tipping Dumper where the same drivers also run site dumpers
  • N133 Plant and Machinery Marshal for keeping people and trucks apart at loading points and tip heads
  • N202 Excavator 360 for the machine loading the trucks, so the loading point works from both ends
  • CITB Health, Safety and Environment test booked with us for the CSCS logo version of the card

Build your course

Who is coming, and how many

We do not run these to a timetable. The course is built around your people: how experienced they are and how many of them there are, which is what sets the length and the cost. Pick the mix and we will come back with a date and a price.

The course builder needs JavaScript. Without it, tell us how many people and what experience they have and we will price it up.

N205 Rear Tipping Dumper FAQs

NPORS publish a four day novice duration, but the group decides the real length. NPORS also set minimum hours by number of learners: 21 hours for one or two candidates and 49 hours for three, so a full group of three runs well beyond four days. A driver already running dump trucks regularly usually takes the one day experienced worker test instead, and a refresher is a day. We confirm the length when we quote.

Yes. The category is Rear Tipping Dumper and it is the ticket drivers of articulated dump trucks hold, along with rigid machines of the same family that tip over the back. The practical is run on the size and type of truck you actually operate, which is why running it on your own fleet is worth doing.

Which way the load goes and how big the machine is. N204 is the forward tipping site dumper, with the skip in front of the operator, moving site sized loads. N205 is the rear tipping dump truck, loaded by an excavator and discharged over the back with the body raised, moving bulk material on a haul route. They are separate NPORS categories and holding one does not cover the other.

Three on the novice course, with one instructor and one machine, which is the NPORS maximum ratio of 3:1:1. On the experienced worker test NPORS allow six in a session, or a combination of three plus three where it is run alongside another dumper category. For a quarry or earthworks crew who already drive, that is usually the efficient route.

The tip head. Reversing to an edge the driver cannot see over, then raising a body on ground that may be soft or uneven, is where these trucks go over or drop off. The course treats discharge as a fixed sequence: designated position, stop block or bund, ground checked, body up, body down before moving. Material hanging up in the body is part of that, because a truck sitting nose high with a full body is a different machine.

Not for the NPORS category itself, which is about operating the machine rather than driving on the public road. In practice quarry operators and principal contractors often set their own medical and eyesight standards for dump truck drivers, and some sites require a specific site induction and authorisation on top of the card. Tell us what your site requires and we will work to it.

The NPORS N205 category. Without a relevant NVQ that is a Red Trained Operator card, valid two years. With the relevant NVQ it is a Blue Competent Operator card, valid five years. Either carries the CSCS logo only while you hold a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass taken within the last two years. A traditional NPORS card without the logo suits quarry and non construction work.

Yes, and it is the better option for this category. Drivers train on your trucks, your haul roads, your loading point and your tip head, and the practical reflects the cycle they will actually run. There are no scheduled dates: we run it when you can release the machines and the people.

NPORS courses are priced per course, not per person. What you are paying for is the instructor, the registered tester and the machine time, so the figure turns on four things: the category, which route your operators need (novice, experienced, conversion or refresher), how many people are coming, and whether we run it on your site or at one of ours. It is also why a squad works out considerably cheaper per head than sending operators out one at a time. Use the course builder on this page: tell it who is coming and it works out how many days the course takes and how many times it has to run, which is what the price is built from. Then ask us and you will get a figure for that exact group rather than a list price with conditions attached.

We run NPORS courses across the UK rather than out of one fixed centre, and for most categories the better answer is that we come to you: your operators are assessed on the machine they will be using anyway, nobody loses a day travelling, and for a group it costs less. If you would rather come to us, we have centres at Trent House in Stoke, Pride Park in Derby, Europa House in Manchester and Kingsway House in Liverpool. Tell us where the work is and we will say honestly which way round makes more sense.

There is no fixed timetable to wait for. NPORS courses here are run to order, which means the dates are built around your programme rather than ours, and a single operator or a full squad can normally be booked in within a couple of weeks. If you have a card about to expire or a start date to hit, say so when you enquire and we will work to it.
