CITB Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) in Derby
One day at our Derby centre. The operative level Site Safety Plus course, and the training half of the green CSCS Labourer card route.
About this course
Health and Safety Awareness is where most people start in construction. One day, no entry requirements, and the CITB course a principal contractor expects a new operative to hold.
It covers the hazards that actually hurt people on site, why the controls are there, what your own responsibilities are, and how to stop something that is going wrong without feeling like you are causing trouble.
Derby employers book it for new starters and for people moving into construction from other industries, usually alongside the HS&E test so the card application can go in straight afterwards.
The centre is Pride Park, Pride Park, Derby DE24. Pride Park is immediately off the A52 and close to the A6 and the A50, and Derby station is walkable from the centre.
We draw candidates from Burton upon Trent, Nottingham, Loughborough, Ashbourne, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Belper and the wider Derbyshire and east Midlands area. If a date at Derby does not suit, the same course runs at our other centres and we can deliver it at your own premises anywhere in the UK.
- The general rules and responsibilities of everyone on site
- How to protect their health and welfare in the workplace
- Key information about general safety on site
- How to stay safe during high risk activities such as work at height
- How they can protect the environment by having an awareness about waste and forms of nuisance
How completing this course helps you
- Hold a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, recognised on sites across the UK
- Show the card checker and your employer that the training is current
- Renew before the five years are up rather than starting again
Who should attend?
New entrants to construction across Derby and the east Midlands: labourers, apprentices and trainees, career changers, and employers inducting new site staff.

At Derby
What to expect on the day
The course is the same wherever you sit it. What changes is the room, the journey and the people in it, and those matter more than providers usually admit.
Our Derby centre is Pride Park, Pride Park, Derby DE24. Pride Park is immediately off the A52 and close to the A6 and the A50, and Derby station is walkable from the centre. Joining instructions go out ahead of the course with timings, what to bring and where to go when you arrive.
If you are booking for a group and travel is the problem, we deliver this course at employers’ own premises anywhere in the country. For six or more people that is usually cheaper per head and nobody loses a day on the road.
Before the day
Joining instructions with timings, the address and what to bring. Tell us at booking if anybody needs support with reading, writing or access and we will sort it quietly.
On the day
Arrive a few minutes early. Bring photographic identification, which most awarding bodies require before they will certificate you.
Afterwards
We tell you the outcome and handle the registration and certification with the awarding body. If anything needs resitting we will get it booked.

Health & Safety Awareness (HSA) FAQs
No, and this is the most common mix up on the whole site. The HS&E test is a 45 minute touch screen exam. Health and Safety Awareness is a one day course. A green CSCS Labourer card needs both, and booking one does not cover the other. We run both, so you can do the pair with us.
For CITB registered employers who are up to date with their Levy Returns, usually yes. We submit the claim on your behalf. Rates change, so we will give you the current figure rather than publishing one here.
Five years, like the rest of the Site Safety Plus scheme.
Pride Park, Pride Park, Derby DE24. Pride Park is immediately off the A52 and close to the A6 and the A50, and Derby station is walkable from the centre. Full joining instructions with timings go out before the course.
The same course runs at our other centres in Stoke-on-Trent, Derby, Manchester and Liverpool, and we deliver it at employers’ own premises anywhere in the UK. Tell us roughly when you need it and we will find something or put a date on.
Yes, anywhere in the country. For six or more people it normally works out cheaper per head than sending everybody to a centre, and we can build the day around your shift patterns.
