CITB SSSTS in Derby
Two days at our Derby centre, and the course most principal contractors ask for by name before they will let somebody supervise a gang. Valid five years.
About this course
SSSTS is the CITB Site Safety Plus course for site supervisors: people responsible for planning, organising, monitoring and controlling the work of others on a construction site.
It covers the relevant legislation, risk assessments and method statements, toolbox talks, monitoring and the health and safety culture a supervisor is expected to maintain. It is assessed, and the certificate runs for five years.
One thing worth being clear about: SSSTS on its own will not get you a Gold Supervisor CSCS card. That needs a vocational qualification, normally a Level 3 or 4 NVQ in site supervision, and a good many supervisors end up holding both.
The centre is Pride Park, Pride Park, Derby DE24. Pride Park is immediately off the A52 and close to the A6 and the A50, and Derby station is walkable from the centre.
We draw candidates from Burton upon Trent, Nottingham, Loughborough, Ashbourne, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Belper and the wider Derbyshire and east Midlands area. If a date at Derby does not suit, the same course runs at our other centres and we can deliver it at your own premises anywhere in the UK.
- Fulfil their role and responsibilities as a site supervisor in promoting and maintaining health, safety and welfare on construction sites
- Apply relevant health and safety legislation, policies and management systems to support legal compliance and safe working practices
- Identify and manage risks using risk assessments, method statements, permits to work, inspections and other appropriate control measures
- Promote the health, wellbeing and safety of workers by recognising occupational health risks and supporting effective welfare arrangements
- Supervise construction activities safely by applying appropriate controls to high risk work, plant, equipment and other site hazards
- Support effective environmental management by recognising environmental risks and applying appropriate controls

Who should attend?
Site supervisors, gangers, foremen and chargehands across Derby and the east Midlands, plus anybody moving up into a supervisory role on a construction site.
Entry requirements. None formally. Delegates should hold, or be about to hold, the role of a site supervisor, and previous health and safety knowledge is recommended.

What to expect on the day
The course is the same wherever you sit it. What changes is the room, the journey and the people in it, and those matter more than providers usually admit.

If you are booking for a group and travel is the problem, we deliver this course at employers’ own premises anywhere in the country. For six or more people that is usually cheaper per head and nobody loses a day on the road.
Before the day
Joining instructions with timings, the address and what to bring. Tell us at booking if anybody needs support with reading, writing or access and we will sort it quietly.
On the day
Arrive a few minutes early. Bring photographic identification, which most awarding bodies require before they will certificate you.
Afterwards
We tell you the outcome and handle the registration and certification with the awarding body. If anything needs resitting we will get it booked.
Method of assessment
How SSSTS is assessed
There is an assessment. CITB set it for every Site Safety Plus course and it is taken during or at the end of the course.
Take part in full
CITB require full attendance across the 2 days before the assessment can be taken.
Assessment
CITB standard GET0040, Health and Safety in Construction Site Supervision (SSP). An end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures the learning outcomes, with a pass or fail criteria.
Certificate
A CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, valid for five years. Renew before it expires or the full course has to be taken again. CITB grant Grant Tier 2, 15 learning hours, standard GET0040.

SSSTS FAQs
No. SSSTS is a two day course with a five year certificate. A Gold Supervisor CSCS card requires a vocational qualification, normally a Level 3 or 4 NVQ in site supervision. Many supervisors hold both, because the site wants the SSSTS and the card wants the NVQ.
Five years. There is a one day SSSTS Refresher to renew it, and it only works while the existing certificate is still in date.
For CITB registered employers up to date with their Levy Returns, usually yes, and we submit the claim for you. Rates change so we will give you the current position rather than publishing a figure.
