UKATA Asbestos Awareness in Liverpool
Half a day at our Liverpool centre in Widnes. The annual UKATA certificate trades need before they open up anything built before the year 2000.
About this course
The people dying of asbestos disease today were exposed by ordinary work years ago, often without ever knowing it happened. That is what makes recognition the whole point of this course.
Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires suitable information, instruction and training for anybody liable to be exposed. Awareness training is how most employers meet and evidence that, and the UKATA certificate is what a site asks to see.
Widnes is convenient for Merseyside, Cheshire and north Wales, and much of the housing and commercial stock across that area predates the 2000 ban comfortably.
The centre is Kingsway House, Caldwell Road, Widnes WA8 7EA. Widnes sits by the Silver Jubilee and Mersey Gateway crossings, minutes from the A557 and the M62, with Widnes and Hough Green stations nearby.
We draw candidates from Widnes, Runcorn, St Helens, Warrington, Speke, Halewood, Knowsley, Ellesmere Port and the wider Merseyside and north Cheshire area. If a date at Liverpool does not suit, the same course runs at our other centres and we can deliver it at your own premises anywhere in the UK.
- What asbestos is, the three main types, and why it was used so widely
- The properties that made it useful and the properties that make it lethal
- Asbestos related diseases: asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma and pleural thickening

- The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, and Regulation 10 in particular
- Where asbestos containing materials are likely to be found in buildings
- Why any building constructed or refurbished before 2000 has to be assumed suspect
- Reading an asbestos register and a refurbishment and demolition survey
- Recognising damaged or deteriorating asbestos containing materials
- What to do if you find or disturb something suspect: stop, prevent access, report
- Emergency procedures following an accidental disturbance
How completing this course helps you
- A UKATA asbestos awareness certificate, valid for one year
- Trades who stop rather than carry on when something looks suspect
- Evidence that your Regulation 10 information, instruction and training duty has been met
- The certificate principal contractors and clients ask for by name at induction
Who should attend?
Trades across Merseyside, Cheshire and north Wales whose work could disturb asbestos: electricians, plumbers and gas engineers, joiners, plasterers, roofers, shopfitters, telecoms engineers, demolition operatives, surveyors and maintenance teams.
Entry requirements. None. No previous asbestos training is needed.

Asbestos Awareness FAQs
One year. Asbestos is one of the few subjects where annual refresher training is genuinely the expectation, and most principal contractors check the date at induction.
No, and this is the point of the course. Awareness training exists so you recognise asbestos containing materials and stop. Carrying out controlled work on them needs the Non Licensed Operative course, and licensed work needs an HSE licensed contractor.
Anything built or refurbished before the year 2000 should be treated as containing asbestos until a survey says otherwise, which covers a very large share of the UK building stock.
Kingsway House, Caldwell Road, Widnes WA8 7EA. Widnes sits by the Silver Jubilee and Mersey Gateway crossings, minutes from the A557 and the M62, with Widnes and Hough Green stations nearby. Full joining instructions with timings go out before the course.
The same course runs at our other centres in Stoke-on-Trent, Derby, Manchester and Liverpool, and we deliver it at employers’ own premises anywhere in the UK. Tell us roughly when you need it and we will find something or put a date on.
Yes, anywhere in the country. For six or more people it normally works out cheaper per head than sending everybody to a centre, and we can build the day around your shift patterns.
