About this course

SSSTS is the supervisor level course in the CITB Site Safety Plus scheme. Two days, no entry requirements beyond being in or about to move into a supervisory role, and a certificate that lasts five years.

It is built around the shift from doing the work to being answerable for how other people do it. Risk assessments and method statements and what to do when the job on site does not match the one on the paper. Toolbox talks that people actually listen to. Inductions, monitoring, and the awkward conversation when somebody is cutting a corner.

Our Stoke-on-Trent centre is Trent House, 234 Victoria Road, Fenton ST4 2LW. It is our head office and the busiest of the four, so it carries the most SSSTS dates in the year. Fenton sits just off the A50 and the A500, a few minutes from junction 15 of the M6, and Stoke-on-Trent station is a short taxi ride away.

Because we are also an approved CITB test centre, Stoke is a sensible place to do the whole card route in one go. If you need the HS&E test as well as the course, both can be sat in the same building.

People travel in from Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford, Crewe, Congleton, Leek, Cheadle, Uttoxeter, Market Drayton and the wider Staffordshire and south Cheshire area. If the dates below do not suit, we run SSSTS at Derby, Manchester and Liverpool too, and we will bring it to your own site anywhere in the UK.

  • Fulfil their role and responsibilities as a site supervisor in promoting and maintaining health, safety and welfare on construction sites
  • Apply relevant health and safety legislation, policies and management systems to support legal compliance and safe working practices
  • Identify and manage risks using risk assessments, method statements, permits to work, inspections and other appropriate control measures
  • Promote the health, wellbeing and safety of workers by recognising occupational health risks and supporting effective welfare arrangements
  • Supervise construction activities safely by applying appropriate controls to high risk work, plant, equipment and other site hazards
  • Support effective environmental management by recognising environmental risks and applying appropriate controls

How completing this course helps you

  • Hold a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, recognised on sites across the UK
  • Show the card checker and your employer that the training is current
  • Renew before the five years are up rather than starting again

Who should attend?

Entry requirements. None formally. Delegates should hold, or be about to hold, the role of a site supervisor, and previous health and safety knowledge is recommended.

What to expect on the day

The course is the same wherever you sit it. What changes is the room, the journey and the people in it, and those matter more than providers usually admit.

Trent House has proper training rooms rather than a corner of an office, parking on site, and refreshments and course materials included. Bring photo ID, because CITB require us to check it before you sit.

Start is 8.30am unless your joining instructions say otherwise. Two consecutive days, and you need both to be certificated.

1

Get the certificate the site is asking for

Two days, in the classroom or live online. SSSTS is valid for five years and a one day refresher keeps it current.

2

Start the NVQ while you carry on working

A Level 3 or 4 supervisory NVQ is assessed on the job. No exams and no day release. Your assessor comes to you and builds the evidence around work you are already doing.

3

Sit the specialist test

The CITB Specialist Supervisor health, safety and environment test, which is the one CSCS need for this card rather than the operatives test.

4

Apply for the gold card

With the NVQ and the specialist test in hand, apply to CSCS. The gold Supervisor card runs for five years.

Method of assessment

How SSSTS is assessed

There is an assessment. CITB set it for every Site Safety Plus course and it is taken during or at the end of the course.

1

Take part in full

CITB require full attendance across the 2 days before the assessment can be taken.

2

Assessment

CITB standard GET0040, Health and Safety in Construction Site Supervision (SSP). An end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures the learning outcomes, with a pass or fail criteria.

3

Certificate

A CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, valid for five years. Renew before it expires or the full course has to be taken again. CITB grant Grant Tier 2, 15 learning hours, standard GET0040.

SSSTS FAQs

No. SSSTS is a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, not a card. The gold Supervisor card is issued against a construction related supervisory or technical NVQ at Level 3 or 4, together with a pass in the CITB Specialist Supervisor health, safety and environment test. Sites often want both, which is why they are usually done together.

Because it is the training the industry recognises for someone supervising work. Principal contractors write it into site rules alongside the card that matches the role. The card says what you are qualified to do. The certificate says your supervisor safety training is current.

Five years. A one day SSSTS refresher taken before it expires keeps it running for another five. Let it lapse and the full two day course has to be taken again.

Yes, and that is how it is designed. A supervisory NVQ is assessed on site around the work you already do, so there is no day release and no written exam.

The CITB Specialist Supervisor test, not the operatives test. CSCS need a pass from within the last two years at the point you apply.

Trent House, 234 Victoria Road, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent ST4 2LW. Just off the A50 and the A500, a few minutes from junction 15 of the M6, with parking on site. Stoke-on-Trent station is a short taxi ride away.

We run SSSTS at Derby, Manchester and Liverpool as well, and the dates on each centre page come straight from the booking system. If none of them work, we will run it at your own site anywhere in the UK, which is usually the better option once you have five or six people.

Yes. Stoke is an approved CITB test centre, so the course and the test can be done in the same building. That matters if you are working towards a card, because it takes the waiting between the two steps out of the process.

Yes. The refresher is one day and it exists to renew a certificate before it expires, not to replace the full two day course. If yours has already run out you need the full SSSTS again.
