About this course
Fire warden training is a half day, and it covers the three parts of the job: the routine checks nobody notices, the sweep and evacuation on the day, and the roll call and handover afterwards.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 puts the duty on the responsible person to make sure everybody can leave safely and to provide adequate fire safety training. Appointing wardens is how most organisations meet that in practice, and an untrained warden is an appointment rather than an arrangement.
Extinguishers get proper time, including the part people find surprising, which is when not to pick one up. A warden who tackles a fire that has already got away, or reaches for the wrong extinguisher, becomes a casualty rather than a help.
The centre is Trent House, 234 Victoria Road, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent ST4 2LW. Fenton sits just off the A50 and the A500, a few minutes from junction 15 of the M6, and Stoke-on-Trent station is a short taxi ride away.
We draw candidates from Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford, Crewe, Congleton, Leek, Cheadle, Uttoxeter, Market Drayton and the wider Staffordshire and south Cheshire area. Who should attend?
Appointed fire wardens and marshals across Stoke-on-Trent and north Staffordshire: offices, warehouses and distribution, ceramics and manufacturing, schools and colleges, care settings, retail and hospitality. Also supervisors and managers with evacuation responsibilities, and the responsible person who signs the fire risk assessment.
Entry requirements. None. It assumes no previous training and it is written for the people doing the work rather than the people writing the policy.

Before the day
Joining instructions with timings, the address and what to bring. Tell us at booking if anybody needs support with reading, writing or access and we will sort it quietly.
On the day
Arrive a few minutes early. Bring photographic identification, which most awarding bodies require before they will certificate you.
Afterwards
We tell you the outcome and handle the registration and certification with the awarding body. If anything needs resitting we will get it booked.

Method of assessment
How Fire Warden / Marshal is assessed
Assessment is built into the session rather than bolted on. Your trainer checks understanding as you go and there is a short written check at the end.
Scenario work
Working through an evacuation of your own building, or a representative one, including the sweep, a person who cannot use the stairs, and a roll call that does not add up.
Extinguisher identification
Matching extinguisher types to fire classes, and identifying the ones in your own building. Live extinguisher use can be arranged separately where a suitable area is available.
Written check and certificate
A short paper on the duties, the fire triangle and extinguisher selection, then an Acadame certificate. We recommend refreshing it annually.

Fire Warden / Marshal FAQs
Annually is the usual interval, and sooner if the building, the layout or the people change. Plenty of Stoke employers pair the refresher with a fire drill so the whole arrangement gets tested rather than just the training.
There is no fixed ratio. It falls out of your fire risk assessment: floors, separate areas, shift patterns, holidays and whether anybody needs assistance to leave. Most buildings need more than they have, because two wardens becomes none the week they are both off.
The session covers types, selection and safe use, and identification of the extinguishers in your own building. Live discharge can be arranged where there is a suitable outdoor area, so say when you book if you want it.
