About this course
Emergency First Aid at Work is the one day workplace qualification, and it concentrates on the incidents that will not wait: an unresponsive casualty, CPR, the recovery position, choking, serious bleeding, shock and seizures.
It does not attempt the wider ground the three day award covers, and it is not meant to. One day, mostly practical, and everybody leaves able to start CPR and control a bleed rather than able to describe them.
It is our most frequently run first aid course at Fenton, and for a whole office or shop team we will come to you instead.
The centre is Trent House, 234 Victoria Road, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent ST4 2LW. Fenton sits just off the A50 and the A500, a few minutes from junction 15 of the M6, and Stoke-on-Trent station is a short taxi ride away.
We draw candidates from Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford, Crewe, Congleton, Leek, Cheadle, Uttoxeter, Market Drayton and the wider Staffordshire and south Cheshire area. If a date at Stoke-on-Trent does not suit, the same course runs at our other centres and we can deliver it at your own premises anywhere in the UK.
- The role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider, consent and infection control
- Assessing an incident: the scene survey, the primary survey, and summoning assistance
- When to administer CPR, and demonstrating adult CPR on a manikin
- When and how to place a casualty in the recovery position, and monitoring them there
- First aid for a casualty experiencing a seizure

Who should attend?
Employees nominated as emergency first aiders across Stoke-on-Trent and north Staffordshire, particularly in offices, retail, hospitality, education and service environments, plus small businesses needing practical first aid cover.
Entry requirements. None. You need to be physically able to carry out practical first aid on the floor, including CPR on a manikin, and to have enough English to follow the training and the written assessment.

If you are booking for a group and travel is the problem, we deliver this course at employers’ own premises anywhere in the country. For six or more people that is usually cheaper per head and nobody loses a day on the road.
Before the day
Joining instructions with timings, the address and what to bring. Tell us at booking if anybody needs support with reading, writing or access and we will sort it quietly.
On the day
Arrive a few minutes early. Bring photographic identification, which most awarding bodies require before they will certificate you.
Afterwards
We tell you the outcome and handle the registration and certification with the awarding body. If anything needs resitting we will get it booked.

- How to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
- The need for consent to provide first aid
- Conducting a scene survey
- Conducting a primary survey of a casualty
- Summoning appropriate assistance when necessary
Emergency first aid
- When to administer CPR, and demonstrating adult CPR on a manikin
- When to place a casualty into the recovery position, and demonstrating it
- Monitoring breathing while a casualty is in the recovery position
- First aid for a casualty experiencing a seizure
- Choking, mild and severe
- Identifying the severity of external bleeding and controlling it
- Recognising and treating shock
- Minor injuries: small cuts, grazes, bruises and small splinters
- Minor burns and scalds in line with accepted current practice
Method of assessment
How Emergency First Aid at Work is assessed
Two steps. Practical observation through the day, then a short written paper.
Practical observation
You are observed carrying out the scene and primary survey, summoning assistance, adult CPR on a manikin, the recovery position and monitoring, choking, and identifying and controlling life threatening external bleeding.
Multiple choice examination
A fifteen question multiple choice paper. The pass mark is eleven correct answers and the maximum time limit is thirty minutes.
Certification
Issued by QNUK and valid for three years. Renewal is by retaking the course, and HSE guidance also recommends an annual refresher in between.

Emergency First Aid at Work FAQs
For a lower hazard workplace, usually yes. The HSE split workplaces into lower and higher hazard and factor in headcount, shift patterns, lone working and distance from help. If several of those point the other way, look at the three day First Aid at Work.
Three years across the range. HSE guidance also recommends an annual refresher in between, which is a separate half day and is a regulated qualification in its own right.
There is no legal number. It comes out of your own first aid needs assessment: hazards, headcount, shift patterns, lone workers, site layout and how far you are from help. Most employers train above the minimum so holidays do not leave them uncovered.
