The NEBOSH National General Certificate goes considerably further. Candidates sit an open-book exam plus a practical workplace assessment, and the syllabus covers everything from management systems to specific hazard categories in real depth.

NEBOSH answers “how do I become competent in health and safety as a discipline in its own right”. A site manager who wants to run their team safely, without changing career direction, is usually well served by IOSH. Someone building a CV toward a health and safety career, or a business appointing its first dedicated safety lead, generally needs NEBOSH. Cost and time commitment often decide it in practice too, since NEBOSH takes longer and costs more, so check your actual requirements before defaulting to the bigger qualification because it sounds more impressive on paper.
