Carpentry NVQ Level 2 and 3: How the Fast Track Route Works

Experienced carpenter without the paperwork? How the carpentry NVQ works on your own jobs and which CSCS card it leads to.

If you already work as a carpenter, an NVQ proves the skills you have rather than teaching you from scratch. There is no classroom: an assessor visits you on your own jobs, and many time-served carpenters finish within a few weeks.

Which carpentry NVQs are there?

LevelQualification and card
Level 2NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations (Site Carpentry). Leads to the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card.
Level 3NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations (Site Carpentry). Leads to the Gold Advanced Craft CSCS card.

Both are awarded by GQA and regulated by Ofqual. Neither level is a prerequisite for the other. Full details are on our Carpentry NVQs page.

Level 2 or Level 3?

Level 2 suits carpenters who carry out standard site carpentry: first and second fix, doors, frames, skirting and stairs. Level 3 suits experienced carpenters who handle more complex work, set out, work from drawings and often lead others on site.

Who the fast track suits

  • Time-served carpenters who learned on the job and never got the paperwork
  • Self-employed carpenters being asked for a Blue or Gold CSCS card
  • Carpenters moving up from Level 2 to Level 3
  • Employers who want their carpentry teams properly carded

How the fast track works

  1. Register. We check your experience and choose the right level and pathway.
  2. Your assessor visits. They watch you work on your own jobs, take photographs and ask why you did things the way you did.
  3. Build your portfolio. Job records, photographs, drawings and a witness statement from your supervisor.
  4. Complete and claim your card. Once every unit is signed off, you receive your certificate and can apply for your CSCS card.

There is no fixed length. The pace is set by how quickly your evidence comes together, not by a timetable.

Avoid these common hold-ups

  • Letting the HS&E test lapse. You need a pass from within the last two years to apply for your card, and you can book your HS&E test at our own test centre.
  • Waiting to collect evidence. Start photographing your jobs from day one.
  • Choosing the wrong level. Talk to us first and we will match it to the work you do.

Funding

CITB grant support may be available if your employer is CITB registered and in scope. Ask us and we will check.
