NEBOSH Diploma or Level 6 in Occupational Health and Safety: Which Route Fits You?

Two Level 6 routes in health and safety: one proves what you know, the other proves what you already run. Here is how to choose.

The NEBOSH Diploma and the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice are both Level 6 routes for health and safety professionals. The NEBOSH Diploma proves what you know through study and assessment; the Level 6 NVQ proves what you already do, using evidence from the management system you run.

Two routes, one level

Both sit at degree level, and both are taken by people whose job is health and safety. The difference is how you get there. One is a knowledge qualification: you study a syllabus and NEBOSH assesses it. The other is a competence qualification: there is nothing to sit, and an assessor reviews real evidence from your work.

What the Level 6 NVQ involves

Ten mandatory units plus one policy unit, worth 110 credits. You evidence the legal framework you work to, the culture you build, how you communicate and maintain competence, how you manage risk, your proactive and reactive monitoring, emergency arrangements, reviews and how you keep current. For the policy unit you either design and introduce a policy, or review and update one, but not both.

There is no classroom and no fixed duration: you can register any week and go at your own pace. GQA require an initial assessment before you register, and the check on our Level 6 page is that assessment.

IOSH membership

IOSH ask for a Level 6 health and safety qualification and two years of experience for Certified membership (CertIOSH), with Chartered membership following from there. Both routes here are Level 6 health and safety qualifications, but IOSH assess each application on its own certificate and experience, so check with them for your situation. Our IOSH membership levels guide explains the grades.

On construction sites

The Level 6 NVQ also makes you eligible for the Black CSCS Manager card as a Senior Construction Health and Safety Manager, once you have passed the CITB Managers and Professionals test. GQA issue the card, and it carries the CSCS logo.

Which route fits you?

  • Choose the NEBOSH Diploma if you want to build deep knowledge first, or you are not yet running a full health and safety system.
  • Choose the Level 6 NVQ if you already write the policy, run the audits and lead investigations, and want a qualification that recognises it without time out of work.
  • Not running the system yet? The NEBOSH National General Certificate is the usual first step, and the Level 3 NVQ suits people who apply the system in their own area.

We do not deliver the NEBOSH Diploma. We do deliver the Level 6 NVQ, and the Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Health and Safety Leadership and Management for heads of health and safety and directors, so we can tell you honestly which route fits.
