IOSH Working Safely
One day for everybody on the payroll rather than the people managing them. The same ideas as Managing Safely, pitched at the person doing the work.
About this course
Working Safely is IOSH's one day course for employees at any level, in any sector. It assumes no safety background and it is not written for managers: it is the course you put a whole shift, department or site team through so that everybody is working from the same understanding.
It is deliberately practical. Rather than teaching the law, it teaches people to see a hazard for what it is, to understand what makes it a risk, and to do something about it instead of walking past it.
We run it in a classroom at our centres, live online, and at your own premises for a group anywhere in the UK, which for a whole team is usually the easier way round.
- Introducing working safely: why it matters to the person doing the job, not only to the company
- Defining hazards and risks: the difference between the two, and why it changes what you do about it
- Identifying common hazards: the ones that turn up across every industry, including the ones people stop noticing
- Improving safety performance: what everyone on site can do about it rather than leaving it to a manager
- Protecting the environment: the environmental side of the working day, which most awareness courses leave out
How completing this course helps you
- An IOSH Working Safely certificate, internationally recognised and verifiable with IOSH
- A workforce that reports what it sees instead of assuming somebody else already has
- A straight answer for a client or an auditor asking what safety training your people have had
- A sensible first step before anybody moves up to Managing Safely
Who should attend?
For employees at any level, in any sector, who want to understand workplace safety and work safely. IOSH designed it for people with little or no formal safety training.
Entry requirements. None. IOSH built the course for people with little or no formal health and safety training, so nothing is assumed.

Where it sits
Working Safely, Managing Safely, and which one your people need
Working Safely is for the person doing the job. Managing Safely is for the person responsible for them. They are not levels of the same course and nobody needs to do one before the other: it depends entirely on the role.
If you are putting a whole workforce through something, this is the one. If you are putting supervisors and managers through something, it is Managing Safely, and it takes three days rather than one.
On construction sites specifically, a site gate is looking for a CITB certificate rather than an IOSH one. Health and Safety Awareness is the CITB equivalent for an operative, and the two sit alongside each other.
One day, then the paper
Classroom, live online or at your own premises for a group. Full attendance, then the 28 question paper.
An internationally recognised certificate
Verifiable with IOSH, and accepted across every sector rather than construction alone.
Move people up when the job does
When somebody takes on responsibility for other people, Managing Safely is the three day course written for that.
Method of assessment
How IOSH Working Safely is assessed
IOSH set the assessment and it is taken at the end of the day.
Take part across the day
One day, built on examples from the sort of work the group actually does. Full attendance is expected before the assessment.
Sit the 28 question paper
A written paper of 28 questions covering the five areas, taken at the end of the day. Nothing is sent away to be marked later.
Certificate
An IOSH Working Safely certificate, internationally recognised, and every genuine IOSH certificate can be verified online.

IOSH Working Safely FAQs
There is a written paper of 28 questions at the end of the day, covering the five areas the course works through. It is done as part of the course rather than sent away to be marked later.
One day. We run it in a classroom at our centres, live online, and at your own premises for a group anywhere in the UK.
Working Safely is for the person doing the job and takes one day, with a 28 question paper. Managing Safely is for the person responsible for them, takes three days, and adds a practical risk assessment project to the paper. They are written for different roles rather than being levels of the same thing.
IOSH do not set an expiry on it. Plenty of employers refresh awareness training every three years as their own policy, and if that is what your procedures say, tell us and we will work to it.
It is recognised, but a site gate is normally looking for a CITB certificate rather than an IOSH one. For an operative that is the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course, which is also the route to a green Labourer card. The two sit alongside each other.
No. IOSH designed the course for people with little or no formal safety training, so nothing is assumed.
Yes, at your own premises anywhere in the UK, which for a group is usually both cheaper and easier than sending people out. Tell us how many people and where, and we will come back the same working day.
