Manual Handling Awareness Training in Derby
Half a day in Derby on the biggest single cause of workplace injury in Britain. Practical, with real loads, and built around the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.
About this course
Most handling injuries are cumulative rather than sudden. The same awkward lift at the end of the same shift, for years, and then a back that does not recover.
The regulations are clear about the order: avoid the handling operation where you reasonably can, assess what you cannot avoid, reduce the risk, and only then worry about technique. This half day works through all four rather than starting at the last one.
Delivered onsite around Derby we use your own loads, in your own layout, which routinely shows that the problem is a delivery point or a shelf height rather than anybody’s lifting posture.
The centre is Pride Park, Pride Park, Derby DE24. Pride Park is immediately off the A52 and close to the A6 and the A50, and Derby station is walkable from the centre.
We draw candidates from Burton upon Trent, Nottingham, Loughborough, Ashbourne, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Belper and the wider Derbyshire and east Midlands area. If a date at Derby does not suit, the same course runs at our other centres and we can deliver it at your own premises anywhere in the UK.
- The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and the avoid, assess, reduce hierarchy
- How the spine is actually injured, and why cumulative damage does not announce itself
- Avoiding the handling operation: layout, deliveries, packaging and mechanical aids
- Assessing a handling operation: task, individual, load and environment
- The HSE guideline filter figures, and what they are and are not for
- Reducing risk: handling aids, two person lifts, breaking loads down, changing heights
- Proper lifting technique, practised with real loads
- Pushing, pulling, carrying and team handling
- Awkward loads, restricted spaces and unstable or unpredictable loads
- Reporting discomfort early, and why waiting until it hurts is the expensive option
How completing this course helps you
- An Acadame certificate in Manual Handling
- People who assess a lift before they take hold of it
- Fewer cumulative injuries, which are the ones that cost most
- Evidence that your information, instruction and training duty has been met
- A list of the handling problems in your own workplace, if we run it onsite
Who should attend?
Anybody who lifts, carries, pushes or pulls at work across Derby and the east Midlands: manufacturing and engineering, rail and logistics, warehousing, construction, care and healthcare, retail and hospitality, plus the supervisors responsible for them.
Entry requirements. None. It assumes no previous training and it is written for the people doing the work rather than the people writing the policy.

At Derby
What to expect on the day
The course is the same wherever you sit it. What changes is the room, the journey and the people in it, and those matter more than providers usually admit.
Our Derby centre is Pride Park, Pride Park, Derby DE24. Pride Park is immediately off the A52 and close to the A6 and the A50, and Derby station is walkable from the centre. Joining instructions go out ahead of the course with timings, what to bring and where to go when you arrive.
If you are booking for a group and travel is the problem, we deliver this course at employers’ own premises anywhere in the country. For six or more people that is usually cheaper per head and nobody loses a day on the road.
Before the day
Joining instructions with timings, the address and what to bring. Tell us at booking if anybody needs support with reading, writing or access and we will sort it quietly.
On the day
Arrive a few minutes early. Bring photographic identification, which most awarding bodies require before they will certificate you.
Afterwards
We tell you the outcome and handle the registration and certification with the awarding body. If anything needs resitting we will get it booked.

Method of assessment
How Manual Handling is assessed
Assessment is built into the session rather than bolted on. Your trainer checks understanding as you go and there is a short written check at the end.
Practical handling
Everybody lifts, with feedback. We use your own loads where we are onsite, which regularly shows the technique was never the problem.
Assessment exercise
Assessing a real handling operation using task, individual, load and environment, and deciding what would reduce the risk.
Written check and certificate
A short paper on the regulations and the hierarchy, then an Acadame certificate. We recommend refreshing every three years, or sooner if the work changes.

Manual Handling FAQs
There is no legal maximum. The HSE publish guideline filter figures that change with where the load is held relative to the body, and they are a screening tool rather than safe limits. The assessment is what decides, not a number.
Every three years is typical, and sooner if the work, the loads or the equipment change, or if injuries and near misses suggest the message has not landed.
Yes, where we deliver onsite. Walking the workplace during the session usually produces a short list of practical changes, and those remove more risk than the training itself.
Pride Park, Pride Park, Derby DE24. Pride Park is immediately off the A52 and close to the A6 and the A50, and Derby station is walkable from the centre. Full joining instructions with timings go out before the course.
The same course runs at our other centres in Stoke-on-Trent, Derby, Manchester and Liverpool, and we deliver it at employers’ own premises anywhere in the UK. Tell us roughly when you need it and we will find something or put a date on.
Yes, anywhere in the country. For six or more people it normally works out cheaper per head than sending everybody to a centre, and we can build the day around your shift patterns.
