Manual Handling Awareness Training in Stoke-on-Trent
Half a day in Stoke-on-Trent on the single largest cause of workplace injury in Britain. Not a lecture about bending your knees: the assessment that decides whether the lift should happen at all, and the technique for when it has to.
About this course
Handling injuries make up a large share of reported workplace injuries every year, and most of them are not dramatic. They are cumulative: the same awkward lift, the same twist at the end of a shift, for years, until a back gives out.
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 put avoidance first, then assessment, then risk reduction, and only then technique. This half day follows the same order, which is why it spends time on the shelf at the wrong height rather than only on the person lifting from it.
It is practical throughout. Onsite in Stoke-on-Trent we use your own loads in the positions your people actually handle them, which is how you find out the problem was never anybody’s posture.

Who should attend?
Anybody who lifts, carries, pushes or pulls at work across Stoke-on-Trent and north Staffordshire: warehouse and logistics staff, ceramics and manufacturing operatives, construction and groundworks teams, care and healthcare staff, retail and hospitality teams, and the supervisors responsible for them.
Entry requirements. None. It assumes no previous training and it is written for the people doing the work rather than the people writing the policy.

Before the day
Joining instructions with timings, the address and what to bring. Tell us at booking if anybody needs support with reading, writing or access and we will sort it quietly.
On the day
Arrive a few minutes early. Bring photographic identification, which most awarding bodies require before they will certificate you.
Afterwards
We tell you the outcome and handle the registration and certification with the awarding body. If anything needs resitting we will get it booked.

Method of assessment
How Manual Handling is assessed
Assessment is built into the session rather than bolted on. Your trainer checks understanding as you go and there is a short written check at the end.
Practical handling
Everybody lifts, with feedback. We use your own loads where we are onsite, which regularly shows the technique was never the problem.
Assessment exercise
Assessing a real handling operation using task, individual, load and environment, and deciding what would reduce the risk.
Written check and certificate
A short paper on the regulations and the hierarchy, then an Acadame certificate. We recommend refreshing every three years, or sooner if the work changes.

There is no legal maximum. The HSE publish guideline filter figures that change with where the load is held relative to the body, and they are a screening tool rather than safe limits. The assessment is what decides, not a number.
Every three years is typical, and sooner if the work, the loads or the equipment change, or if injuries and near misses suggest the message has not landed.
Yes, where we deliver onsite. Walking the workplace during the session usually produces a short list of practical changes, and those remove more risk than the training itself.
