UKATA Asbestos Awareness in Stoke-on-Trent
Half a day at our Stoke-on-Trent centre. The UKATA asbestos awareness certificate, refreshed annually, for anybody whose work could disturb asbestos containing materials.
About this course
Asbestos awareness is not training to work with asbestos. It is training to recognise it and stop, which is why it applies to so many trades who never intend to go near the stuff.
Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires employers to ensure anybody liable to be exposed, and anybody supervising them, receives suitable information, instruction and training. The UKATA certificate is the recognised way of showing it.
We run it at Trent House in Fenton and onsite across Staffordshire and south Cheshire, which for a maintenance team is usually the easier option.
The centre is Trent House, 234 Victoria Road, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent ST4 2LW. Fenton sits just off the A50 and the A500, a few minutes from junction 15 of the M6, and Stoke-on-Trent station is a short taxi ride away.
We draw candidates from Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford, Crewe, Congleton, Leek, Cheadle, Uttoxeter, Market Drayton and the wider Staffordshire and south Cheshire area. If a date at Stoke-on-Trent does not suit, the same course runs at our other centres and we can deliver it at your own premises anywhere in the UK.

Who should attend?
Trades across Staffordshire and south Cheshire whose work could disturb asbestos: electricians, plumbers and gas engineers, joiners, plasterers, painters, roofers, shopfitters, telecoms engineers, surveyors, caretakers and maintenance teams.
Entry requirements. None. No previous asbestos training is needed.

Before the day
Joining instructions with timings, the address and what to bring. Tell us at booking if anybody needs support with reading, writing or access and we will sort it quietly.
On the day
Arrive a few minutes early. Bring photographic identification, which most awarding bodies require before they will certificate you.
Afterwards
We tell you the outcome and handle the registration and certification with the awarding body. If anything needs resitting we will get it booked.

How Asbestos Awareness is assessed
Assessment runs through the session, with a short written check to close. Certification is issued through UKATA.
Discussion and recognition
Working through photographs and material samples of the places asbestos turns up, including several that surprise people every time.
Written check
A short paper covering the health effects, the common locations and the actions to take on discovery.
UKATA certificate
Issued on successful completion and valid for one year. Refresher training is expected annually.

Asbestos Awareness FAQs
One year. Asbestos is one of the few subjects where annual refresher training is genuinely the expectation, and most principal contractors check the date at induction.
No, and this is the point of the course. Awareness training exists so you recognise asbestos containing materials and stop. Carrying out controlled work on them needs the Non Licensed Operative course, and licensed work needs an HSE licensed contractor.
Anything built or refurbished before the year 2000 should be treated as containing asbestos until a survey says otherwise, which covers a very large share of the UK building stock.
