About this course
Some asbestos work does not need a licensed contractor: removing asbestos cement sheeting, working on textured coatings, certain work on asbestos insulating board. Low risk, controlled, and still asbestos exposure.
Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 is explicit that anybody doing this work, and anybody supervising it, needs training suitable for the work actually being done. Awareness training is not that, and the gap is a common one.
The day covers the work categories and how to tell which one you are in, the controls that keep fibre release down, respiratory protective equipment and why an unfitted mask is not protection, decontamination and asbestos waste.
The centre is Trent House, 234 Victoria Road, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent ST4 2LW. Fenton sits just off the A50 and the A500, a few minutes from junction 15 of the M6, and Stoke-on-Trent station is a short taxi ride away.

Who should attend?
Tradespeople and supervisors carrying out non licensed asbestos work across Staffordshire and south Cheshire: maintenance and refurbishment teams, roofing and cladding contractors, builders and demolition operatives, social housing and property maintenance teams.
Entry requirements. None formally, although candidates should already understand asbestos awareness content. If your people have not had asbestos awareness training, tell us and we will make sure the session starts from the right place.

Before the day
Joining instructions with timings, the address and what to bring. Tell us at booking if anybody needs support with reading, writing or access and we will sort it quietly.
On the day
Arrive a few minutes early. Bring photographic identification, which most awarding bodies require before they will certificate you.
Afterwards
We tell you the outcome and handle the registration and certification with the awarding body. If anything needs resitting we will get it booked.

Method of assessment
How Asbestos Non Licensed Operative is assessed
Practical work and observation across the day, with a written assessment to close. Certification is issued through UKATA.
Practical work
Working through controlled methods, donning and doffing protective clothing in the correct order, decontamination and waste bagging. The donning and doffing exercise catches almost everybody the first time.
Category exercise
Deciding whether a series of real jobs are licensed, notifiable non licensed or non licensed. This is the decision that matters most and the one most often got wrong.
Written assessment and certificate
A written check on the regulations, the categories and the controls, then a UKATA certificate valid for one year.
