CITB Short Course Grants
CITB pay grant on achievement of approved short courses, from a few hours to a few weeks. That covers most of the Site Safety Plus range, and as an approved provider we submit the claim for you.
Eligibility
Four things have to be true
Registered with CITB
You have to be a CITB registered employer. If you pay the levy you are registered, and if you are not sure we can usually find out in a phone call.
Up to date with Levy Returns
Compliance with your Levy Returns is a condition of the Grants Scheme. An outstanding return will hold up a claim that is otherwise perfectly valid.
The course is approved
Short course grant applies to courses on the CITB approved list, which covers a great deal of the Site Safety Plus range. Tell us what you are booking and we will confirm.
The candidate achieves
Grant is paid on achievement rather than attendance. Somebody who comes along but does not complete does not attract it.
Delivery
How the course is delivered affects the claim
CITB set out accepted delivery methods in each published course standard, and the grant follows those rather than any arrangement a provider fancies. Classroom delivery has to run the full published duration. eLearning has to be at least half the published duration. A blend of the two has to be at least three quarters.
That matters when somebody offers you a shortened version of a course. A day compressed into an afternoon may look like a saving, and then it does not attract grant, which usually makes it more expensive.
- Classroom: the full duration published in the standard
- eLearning: at least half the published duration
- Blended: at least three quarters of the published duration
- Short course grants cover directly employed staff and subcontractors

Short course grants, answered
It varies by course and CITB change the rates. We will tell you the figure for the course you are actually booking, at the rate in force at the time, rather than publishing a table that goes stale and misleads somebody later.
Yes. Short course grants are available for directly employed staff and for subcontractors, which is one of the more useful features of this particular grant.
It can, where the eLearning runs to at least half the duration published in the course standard. Blended delivery has to reach three quarters. Classroom has to be the full duration. Check the specific course with us before booking on that basis.
We do. As an approved CITB provider we submit on your behalf and chase it. Make sure CITB hold your current bank details, because grant is paid by bank transfer and a missing Bacs authorisation is the usual reason a claim sits unpaid.
It depends on CITB rather than on us, and it varies. We will tell you when the claim went in and follow it up if it goes quiet.
No achievement, no grant. If they resit and pass, the claim goes in then. It is worth factoring into the cost of putting a marginal candidate on a five day course.
Tell us what you are booking
We will confirm whether it attracts short course grant, at the current rate, and submit the claim for you once your people have achieved it.
