IOSH Managing Safely in Derby

About this course
IOSH Managing Safely is the most widely taken management level safety course in the country, and the reason is simple. It is aimed squarely at the person who manages people and work rather than the person who manages health and safety.
Three days covers assessing risk, identifying hazards, understanding responsibilities, investigating incidents and measuring performance. It finishes with an assessment and a practical risk assessment on your own work.
Derby employers send supervisors, team leaders, engineers and project managers on it, usually because a client has asked for it or because somebody has been promoted into responsibility they were never trained for.
The centre is Pride Park, Pride Park, Derby DE24. Pride Park is immediately off the A52 and close to the A6 and the A50, and Derby station is walkable from the centre.
We draw candidates from Burton upon Trent, Nottingham, Loughborough, Ashbourne, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Belper and the wider Derbyshire and east Midlands area. If a date at Derby does not suit, the same course runs at our other centres and we can deliver it at your own premises anywhere in the UK.
- Assessing risks: how to do a risk assessment that stands up, and what a suitable and sufficient one looks like
- Controlling risks: the hierarchy of control, and picking the control that fits the job rather than the one that is easiest to write down
- Understanding your responsibilities: what the law puts on you personally as a manager, and where it stops
- Understanding hazards: the common ones across industries, from machinery and chemicals to the ones people stop noticing
- Investigating incidents: getting to the cause rather than the blame, and what to do with what you find
- Measuring performance: knowing whether the safety effort is working, with leading indicators rather than only the accident count

Who should attend?
Managers, supervisors and team leaders across Derby and the east Midlands: manufacturing and engineering, rail, logistics and warehousing, construction, facilities, care and the public sector. Anybody with people and work to look after rather than a health and safety job title.
Entry requirements. None. IOSH built the course for managers and supervisors without any prior safety expertise, so nothing is assumed.

What to expect on the day
The course is the same wherever you sit it. What changes is the room, the journey and the people in it, and those matter more than providers usually admit.

If you are booking for a group and travel is the problem, we deliver this course at employers’ own premises anywhere in the country. For six or more people that is usually cheaper per head and nobody loses a day on the road.
Before the day
Joining instructions with timings, the address and what to bring. Tell us at booking if anybody needs support with reading, writing or access and we will sort it quietly.
On the day
Arrive a few minutes early. Bring photographic identification, which most awarding bodies require before they will certificate you.
Afterwards
We tell you the outcome and handle the registration and certification with the awarding body. If anything needs resitting we will get it booked.
Method of assessment
How IOSH Managing Safely is assessed
IOSH set the assessment and it is taken at the end of the course rather than weeks later. It comes in two parts.
Take part across the three days
The course is built on worked examples and discussion, so the days do the teaching. Full attendance is expected before the assessment.
Sit the 30 question paper
A written paper of 30 questions covering the six topics, taken at the end of the course rather than sent away and marked weeks later.
Complete the risk assessment project
The practical half. You carry out a risk assessment on a real hazard from your own workplace, which is the part that makes the course worth sending somebody on.
Certificate
An IOSH Managing Safely certificate. IOSH state that it does not expire, and every genuine IOSH certificate can be verified online.

IOSH Managing Safely FAQs
It is a certificated course rather than a regulated qualification. It is extremely widely recognised and it is often exactly what a client is asking for, but if a job advert names a qualification it usually means NEBOSH. Send us the wording and we will tell you which one they mean.
IOSH recommend refreshing every three years, and many employers treat that as a rule. There is a one day IOSH Managing Safely Refresher for people whose certificate is coming up to that.
No. It assumes nothing and it is written for managers rather than safety professionals. If people in the same team need something lighter, IOSH Working Safely is one day and aimed at everybody.
