About this course
The CCNSG Safety Passport is the national safety card for the engineering construction industry. It has run since 1993, it is owned by the industry through the Client Contractor National Safety Group, and on most process and energy sites it is the card that decides whether somebody gets through the gate at all.
It is not a qualification and it does not make anybody a safety professional. What it does is give everybody on site the same baseline: the same understanding of the law, the same language for hazards and risk, and the same idea of what to do when something goes wrong, so a contractor arriving on a client site is not starting from nothing.

Who should attend?
For anybody working on an engineering construction site: contractors, subcontractors, maintenance crews, fabricators, riggers, scaffolders, electricians and the people supervising them. Most clients in the sector make it a condition of entry.
Entry requirements. None. The course assumes no prior safety training. You will need a reasonable standard of spoken and written English, because the assessment is written and taken in English.

Where it sits
The passport, the renewal, and what a site asks for
The full course is two days and is for somebody who has never held the card, or whose card has been allowed to lapse. The renewal is one day and is for somebody whose card is still in date.
As of September 2026 the ECITB give a renewed card 39 months rather than three years, which is three months of grace built into the scheme so a renewal booked slightly late does not cost somebody their site access.
CCNSG is engineering construction. On a building site, a gate is looking for CITB Site Safety Plus instead, so HSA for an operative and SSSTS or SMSTS for a supervisor. Plenty of people working across both sectors carry one of each.
Two days, then the test
Classroom at our centres or at your own premises for a group. Full attendance, then the ECITB assessment.
Three years on the card
Recognised across refineries, power stations, chemical and process sites nationally.
Renew in a day
While the card is in date, the one day renewal keeps it live. Let it expire and it is the full two days again.

Taught face to face, built on discussion and on what the group has actually seen on site. Full attendance is required before the assessment.

A knowledge test at the end of the course, set by the ECITB rather than by us.
Your card
A CCNSG Safety Passport valid for three years. Renew it before it expires with the one day renewal rather than sitting the full two days again.

CCNSG Safety Passport FAQs
Three years from the course. A card renewed on the one day course carries 39 months from the date of the renewal assessment, a change the ECITB made in September 2026.
Only while your card is still in date. Once it has expired you are back to the full two day course, so it is worth booking the renewal before the expiry date rather than after it.
No. CCNSG is the engineering construction passport, run by the ECITB, and it is what a refinery or power station gate asks for. SSSTS and SMSTS are CITB Site Safety Plus and are what a building site asks for. They are not interchangeable, and people who work across both sectors carry both.
