How to Become a Health and Safety Advisor or Manager: Qualifications and Career Path

There is no single route into health and safety, but there is a clear ladder of qualifications. Here is how people move from first course to advisor, manager and beyond.

Many health and safety professionals did not set out to work in health and safety. They started as site managers, engineers, nurses, warehouse supervisors or office managers, picked up responsibility for safety, and found they enjoyed it. Whichever way you come in, the qualifications follow a clear ladder.

Step 1: a first qualification

If health and safety is part of your job, IOSH Managing Safely is the usual starting point. It covers risk assessment, hazards, the law and investigating incidents in a few days. In construction, CITB’s SSSTS and SMSTS do the same for supervisors and managers.

Step 2: a professional certificate

The NEBOSH National General Certificate is the qualification most often asked for in advisor job adverts. It is IOSH accredited for Technical membership. For people already doing the job who would rather be assessed on their real work than sit exams, the Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety is a portfolio-based alternative. Our guide NEBOSH or IOSH? helps you decide between the first two steps.

Step 3: degree-level

To progress to manager roles and Chartered membership of IOSH, you need a degree-level qualification. The Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is assessed through a portfolio of evidence from your own job, which suits experienced practitioners. The NEBOSH National Diploma and accredited degrees are the other main routes.

Step 4: Chartered and strategic

Becoming a Chartered member of IOSH (CMIOSH) is the benchmark for senior roles. At director level, the Level 7 Diploma focuses on strategy, governance and leadership. Our guide to IOSH membership levels explains each grade.

Frequently asked questions

What qualifications do I need to be a health and safety advisor?

Most advisor roles ask for the NEBOSH National General Certificate or an equivalent level 3 qualification, plus experience.

Usually a degree-level qualification, such as the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or the NEBOSH National Diploma, and often Chartered membership of IOSH.

Can I get into health and safety without a degree?

Yes. Many professionals start with IOSH and NEBOSH certificates and then gain a degree-level qualification such as the Level 6 NVQ while working.
