About this course

CCNSG is the engineering construction safety passport: the scheme that gets you onto power stations, refineries, chemical and process plants and water treatment works. A CSCS card will not do instead, and sites are strict about it.

Two days, assessed, valid for three years. It covers the hazards particular to engineering construction, the permit systems that control them, and the standard of behaviour expected on site.

Bury is a few minutes from the M66 and close to the M60 and M62, which makes it a practical base for anybody working across Greater Manchester, east Lancashire and into Yorkshire.

The centre is Europa House, Barcroft Street, Bury BL9 5BT. Bury is a few minutes from junction 2 of the M66, with the M60 and M62 close by, and Bury Interchange connects to the Metrolink into central Manchester.

We draw candidates from Bury, Bolton, Rochdale, Oldham, Salford, Wigan, Stockport and the wider Greater Manchester and east Lancashire area. If a date at Manchester does not suit, the same course runs at our other centres and we can deliver it at your own premises anywhere in the UK.

  • Health and safety law: what it asks of you, what it asks of your employer, and where the two meet
  • Hazards and risk on an operational site, and the difference between the two in practice rather than on paper
  • Safe working practices: permits, isolation, confined spaces, work at height and the controls that go with them
  • Tools, plant and equipment, and the checks that happen before anybody uses them
  • Emergency response: what to do, who to tell, and how a site expects an incident to be reported
  • Your own responsibility on site, which is the part the card is really certifying

How completing this course helps you

  • A CCNSG Safety Passport card, valid for three years and recognised across engineering construction
  • Access to client sites that will not let an uncarded contractor through the gate
  • A common baseline across a crew, so a toolbox talk starts from shared ground
  • Something concrete for a client or a tender asking what safety training your people hold

Who should attend?

Anybody who needs site access to an engineering construction site in and around Manchester: mechanical and electrical fitters, welders and fabricators, pipefitters, riggers, scaffolders, insulation and cladding teams, instrument technicians, labourers and the supervisors and visitors who need to get past the gate. Contractors working across Greater Manchester, Lancashire and west Yorkshire book it here.

Entry requirements. None. The course assumes no prior safety training. You will need a reasonable standard of spoken and written English, because the assessment is written and taken in English.

At Manchester

What to expect on the day

The course is the same wherever you sit it. What changes is the room, the journey and the people in it, and those matter more than providers usually admit.

Our Manchester centre is Europa House, Barcroft Street, Bury BL9 5BT. Bury is a few minutes from junction 2 of the M66, with the M60 and M62 close by, and Bury Interchange connects to the Metrolink into central Manchester. Joining instructions go out ahead of the course with timings, what to bring and where to go when you arrive.

If you are booking for a group and travel is the problem, we deliver this course at employers’ own premises anywhere in the country. For six or more people that is usually cheaper per head and nobody loses a day on the road.

1

Before the day

Joining instructions with timings, the address and what to bring. Tell us at booking if anybody needs support with reading, writing or access and we will sort it quietly.

2

On the day

Arrive a few minutes early. Bring photographic identification, which most awarding bodies require before they will certificate you.

3

Afterwards

We tell you the outcome and handle the registration and certification with the awarding body. If anything needs resitting we will get it booked.

Method of assessment

How the CCNSG Safety Passport is assessed

The ECITB set the assessment and it is taken at the end of the second day.

1

Two days in the room

Taught face to face, built on discussion and on what the group has actually seen on site. Full attendance is required before the assessment.

2

The ECITB assessment

A knowledge test at the end of the course, set by the ECITB rather than by us.

3

Your card

A CCNSG Safety Passport valid for three years. Renew it before it expires with the one day renewal rather than sitting the full two days again.

CCNSG Safety Passport FAQs

Three years. Renewal is a one day course rather than the full two days, and it has to be done before the passport expires. Once it has lapsed you are back on the full course, which is a day longer and considerably more annoying.

Yes, and it is not optional. ECITB require photographic ID before they will issue a passport, so bring a passport or a photocard driving licence on the first morning. No ID means no card, whatever happens in the room.

No. CSCS covers construction sites. CCNSG is the safety passport for engineering construction: power stations, refineries, chemical plants, water treatment and similar. A site that asks for CCNSG will not accept a CSCS card in its place.

The same course runs at our other centres in Stoke-on-Trent, Derby, Manchester and Liverpool, and we deliver it at employers’ own premises anywhere in the UK. Tell us roughly when you need it and we will find something or put a date on.

Yes, anywhere in the country. For six or more people it normally works out cheaper per head than sending everybody to a centre, and we can build the day around your shift patterns.
