About this course
EUSR National Water Hygiene, the Blue Card, is what a water company checks before it lets anybody near a clean water asset. Service reservoirs, treatment works, pumping stations, boreholes, mains and service pipes all sit inside it.
It applies to far more people than water company employees. Contractors, subcontractors and Self-Lay Organisations working on potable water systems are all caught by it, and plenty of groundworks teams discover that on the morning they are turned away.
Half a day, a multiple choice paper and a health screening questionnaire, and the registration lasts three years. There is no shorter refresher: when it runs out you sit the course again, which is worth diarising across a team rather than one person at a time.
The centre is Trent House, 234 Victoria Road, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent ST4 2LW. Fenton sits just off the A50 and the A500, a few minutes from junction 15 of the M6, and Stoke-on-Trent station is a short taxi ride away.

Who should attend?
Anybody carrying out restricted operations on the clean water network or entering clean water sites across Staffordshire, Cheshire and the west Midlands: water company staff, contractors and subcontractors, Self-Lay Organisation operatives, groundworkers and plant operators.
Entry requirements. None. You do not need a qualification or any previous training to sit it. You will complete a health screening questionnaire as part of the assessment, and you are expected to take a full part in the session.

Before the day
Joining instructions with timings, the address and what to bring. Tell us at booking if anybody needs support with reading, writing or access and we will sort it quietly.
On the day
Arrive a few minutes early. Bring photographic identification, which most awarding bodies require before they will certificate you.
Afterwards
We tell you the outcome and handle the registration and certification with the awarding body. If anything needs resitting we will get it booked.

Method of assessment
How National Water Hygiene is assessed
One assessment at the end of the session, plus the health screening questionnaire. There is no portfolio and nothing to submit afterwards.
Multiple choice paper
Sat at the end of the course. It covers the hygiene controls, the contamination routes and the personal responsibilities the session has just worked through.
Health screening questionnaire
Completed alongside the paper. It is part of the scheme rather than a medical, and it is why fitness to work is covered during the session.
Registration and the Blue Card
A pass is registered with EUSR and the registration is valid for three years. There is no shorter refresher route: you retake the course when it expires.

National Water Hygiene FAQs
Three years. There is no separate refresher course, so when the registration expires you retake National Water Hygiene in full.
No. National Water Hygiene is about protecting the water supply from contamination. SHEA Water is the safety, health and environmental awareness passport for the water utilities. Many water contracts expect both, and they are separate registrations.
