ECITB CCNSG Courses

The CCNSG Safety Passport is the card the engineering construction industry asks for at the gate. We run all three ECITB courses: the two day passport, the one day renewal, and Leading a Team Safely for the people running the gang.

Work it out in one line

New card, renewal, or team leader

1

Never held a passport

The two day CCNSG Safety Passport. No entry requirements and nothing to hold first.

2

Card still in date

The one day Renewal. Bring the card or have the number ready, because we have to check it.

3

Card already expired

The full two day course again. Once it has lapsed the renewal is not open to you, whatever the date on it.

4

Running a team

Leading a Team Safely, one day, on top of a valid passport rather than instead of it.

What the card is

Why engineering construction asks for CCNSG rather than CSCS

Engineering construction has its own safety passport, and it is not the same scheme as the construction industry's CSCS card. The CCNSG Safety Passport is run by the ECITB and it is what refineries, power stations, chemical plants, major process sites and their contractors ask for at the gate.

One card, accepted across client sites nationally, which is the point of it. It means an operative moving between contractors and sites does not sit through a different induction scheme at every one.

It lasts three years. Renew it before that runs out and you do one day, and the renewed card carries 39 months rather than three years, a change the ECITB made in September 2026. Let it lapse and you do the full two days again, which is the single most expensive mistake people make with this card.

  • Run by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board
  • Accepted across refineries, power stations, chemical and process plants
  • Valid for three years from the date you pass
  • Renewed in one day, but only while it is still live

Common questions about CCNSG and the ECITB

Three years from the date you pass. While it is still in date you can renew with the one day Renewal course, and a renewed card carries 39 months from the date of the renewal assessment, which the ECITB extended from three years in September 2026.

You have to do the full two day Safety Passport again. The one day Renewal is only open to people whose card is still in date, and there is no grace period, so it is worth booking the renewal before the expiry date rather than after it.

No. CSCS is the construction industry scheme. CCNSG is the engineering construction industry scheme, run by the ECITB, and it is what a refinery, power station or process plant will ask for. Plenty of people hold both because they work across both sectors.

At our centres in Stoke-on-Trent, Manchester, Liverpool and Derby, and at your own site anywhere in the UK for a group. If you need it somewhere we do not have a centre, ask, because we can usually arrange it.

No. It assumes no prior safety training. You do need a reasonable standard of spoken and written English, because the course is taught and assessed in English.

It is the one day course for team leaders, chargehands and supervisors on engineering construction sites. It sits on top of a valid Safety Passport rather than replacing it.

Yes, anywhere in the UK. For a group it is usually cheaper and a lot less disruptive than sending people out. Tell us how many and where and we will come back the same working day.

Not sure which CCNSG course you need?

Tell us whether the card is new, live or lapsed and we will put you on the right one. We would rather spend two minutes on the phone than put somebody through two days they did not need.
