About the NPORS N201 Excavator 180°

The NPORS N201 Excavator 180° qualification is designed to equip operators with the essential knowledge and practical skills required for the safe and efficient operation of 180° excavators. This comprehensive course covers key areas such as understanding industry hazards, adhering to health and safety legislation, conducting pre-operational checks, and mastering machine controls and functions. Delegates will also learn about environmental considerations, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and procedures for machine transportation and storage. Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS operator card, valid for up to five years, demonstrating their competence and commitment to maintaining high safety standards in excavation operations.

Course Content
  • Gain a foundational understanding of the construction industry, recognising the inherent dangers and your responsibilities as an excavator operator.

  • Develop a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the specific machine to be used, ensuring safe and efficient operation. 

  • Locate and identify the major components and key controls of the 180° excavator, understanding their functions and importance. 

  • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer and legislative requirements to ensure the machine’s readiness and safety.

  • Identify and maintain appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for excavator use, including safety boots, ear defenders, eye protection, dust masks, gloves, overalls, and hard hats. 

  • Prepare the excavator for use, including correct starting procedures, mounting and dismounting practices, and adjusting or changing attachments safely.

  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area, considering factors such as ground conditions, overhead and underground services, and environmental considerations. 

  • Operate the machinery safely and efficiently, adhering to best practices and safety protocols. 

  • Understand environmental considerations related to excavator operation, including noise, vibration, and emissions.

  • Learn proper storage and transport procedures for excavator attachments, ensuring they are secured and maintained correctly. Explain loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation, adhering to safety guidelines and regulations. 

  • Carry out all end-of-shift and shutdown procedures, including securing the machine and reporting any defects or issues.

Methods of Assessment

The method of assessment is a three-step journey:

A written assessment covering regulations, machine controls, and operational safety.

Candidates will demonstrate the safe operation of the tool, including pre-operational checks and performing tasks.

Candidates will showcase proper shutdown techniques to ensure safety and compliance.
